Furman rallies to sweep midweek doubleheader over CSU

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman scored 10 of its 15 runs in the fifth inning or later Tuesday to win both games of a doubleheader over Charleston Southern at Pepsi Stadium.

The Paladins won the first game, 8-6, and the second game, 7-4.

Ashley Meckley had four hits and four RBI's across the two games for the Bucs, including her team-leading 10th home run of the season. Sarah Brown had two hits and three RBI's in the first game for CSU, while Katelyn Norris also had a multi-hit game in the opener.

Furman scored once in each of the first two innings of the opening game before a four-run third put the Bucs ahead. Brown hit a two-run double down the line in left and Meckley followed that with a two-run single to left. The Paladins scored two runs apiece in the third and fourth to take the lead back, but CSU answered in the fifth on a Brown sacrifice fly and a Meckley RBI single. Furman took the lead with one in the fifth, added an insurance run in the sixth and held on to take the opener, 8-6.

The Bucs took an early lead in the second game on a delayed steal of home by Brooklynn Brewington in the first inning. The play was part of a double steal, as Brown swiped second base. Furman answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring on a Buccaneer fielding error. Meckley broke the deadlock in the fourth inning, blasting a solo homer over the wall in left to put the Bucs back in front. CSU added two more runs in the sixth on a Madison Koger sacrifice fly and a Furman throwing errors before the Paladins staged a late-inning rally. Furman scored six in the bottom of the sixth inning and kept the Bucs off the scoreboard in the seventh to clinch the doubleheader sweep.
