CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern defensive lineman
Shaundre Mims added to his preseason accolades as the senior was recognized on the 2021 Buck Buchanan preseason watch list this afternoon.
Mims becomes the third Buccaneer defensive player in program history to be recognized on the watch list joining former CSU great Anthony Ellis (2017) and current teammate
Nick Salley (2019) to receive the honor.
Earlier this fall Mims was recognized on the STATS Perform FCS All-American Third Team as the Vanceboro, N.C. native received his first preseason All-American accolade of the season and third in the last two years. Mims was recognized on the 2020 HERO Sports FCS All-American team and the 2020 College Football America Yearbook's FCS Preseason Starting Lineup prior to the 2020-21 season.
Mims was also recognized as a member of the 2021 Big South Football Preseason All-Conference First Team. He earned the recognition for the second consecutive season as the interior lineman has become a wrecking ball along the defensive line for the Buccaneers. The senior defensive tackle paced the Bucs with a team-high 5.5 tackles and added 1.5 sacks over CSU's four games this spring.
Mims opened the shortened spring season with a career-high 12 tackles and added 3.0 tackles for loss in the opener against Kennesaw State in a signature effort. Over the course of the 2021 spring season he recorded at least one tackle for loss per game and finished in the top-35 in FCS in tackles for loss.
More players can join the watch list during the regular season, and a national media panel will select the winner following it. Dexter Coakley won the inaugural Buchanan in 1995 and repeated a year later, but there hasn't been a two-time recipient since, although other past winners such as Rashean Mathis, Jared Allen and Arthur Moats joined Coakley with excellent NFL careers.
Also this season, Stats Perform will present the Walter Payton Award (FCS offensive player of the year), Jerry Rice Award (FCS freshman player of the year), Eddie Robinson Award (FCS coach of the year) and Doris Robinson Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The Buccaneers open up the 2021 season on the road at The Citadel on September 11. CSU's 2021 home opener is set for September 18 at Buccaneer Field as the Bucs welcome Monmouth for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
