CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern welcomed two-time defending Big South champion and No. 20-ranked Monmouth to Buccaneer Field Saturday night in the league opener for both teams but it was the Hawks who picked up the win, tallying a 41-14 decision.
CHAMBERS RUNS HIS WAY TO SCORES
The two touchdowns for the Bucs both came via the athletic ability of quarterback
Jack Chambers. After slicing up The Citadel's defense in last week's season opener with four passing touchdowns, Chambers used his legs, this week.
He eluded Monmouth defenders, weaving his way through the defensive backfield to provide the Buccaneers their only points. His first score was an 8-yard dash with 3:00 left in the second quarter before he added a 20-yard rush at 9:56 of the third period.
DISTRIBUTING WELL TO SIX
Chambers and backup
Ross Malmgren completed a 50.0 percent performance through the air, combining for a 20-of-40 effort while hitting six different receivers.
Demetrius Jones led the way with six grabs for 63 yards, while
Geoffrey Wall led the corps with 66 yards through the air, including a 36-yard reception midway through the second quarter.
SAYEAH, SAY WHO?
Defensively,
Garrett Sayegh led the way with a career-best tying 12 tackles. Seven of his stops were solo as he worked his way into a tie of his effort at Kennesaw State March 13, 2021. The 12 tackles were also the most of any CSU player, this season, and he is the only player to reach double figures in the 2021 campaign.
WILLIAMS SACKS, AGAIN
Breaking into the Hawks backfield to wrap up quarterback Tony Muskett were
Anton Williams and
Shaundre Mims on separate sacks. Williams pads his total to a team-best two sacks through the first-two weeks of the season.
