CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern softball earned its first win on the season in comeback fashion as the Bucs bested Toledo 11-9 in eight innings before falling 5-0 to UNCW in the nightcap at the CSU Softball Complex.
Charleston Southern (1-3) struck first in the first contest, as
Ashley Meckley and
Lilly Bishop came around to score in the home-half of the opening frame. Toledo (2-2) would answer right back in its half of the inning, scratching across two to knot things up through one. The Rockets would that their first lead in the second with two runs in the frame before adding one more in the fourth to make it 5-2.Â
Â
CSU would get an RBI-single from
Raleigh Lewis to close the gap to just two, but Toledo would answer with three of its own in the bottom half of the fifth to take an 8-3 lead.
SeaEnna Satcher left the yard in the top of the sixth to start a huge Buccaneer rally and tie things up at eight. Gracie Price would tie the game with a two-bagger to center, missing a go-ahead bomb by just inches as the ball hit the top of the fence and came back into play.
Â
The extra softball in game one went the way of the Bucs, as Prince and Satcher would each come up with timely hits to drive in runs before
Rhiana Hubbard capped the frame off with a RBI-single up the middle to give CSU the 11-8 advantage.
Annah Junge, who came in to relieve
Maggie Carpenter in the circle in the third, would shut the door on the Rockets to qualify for the win.
Game two saw a gem in the circle by Kara Hammock for the Seahawks, as UNCW (2-0) blanked Charleston Southern 5-0. Hammock only surrendered three hits across the full seven innings and got plenty of run support from her offense. The Seahawks brought one across in the fourth before using a four-run fifth to put things out of reach. Mary Sobataka highlighted the fifth with a two-run homer to right center to give her pitcher all she needed in the effort.
