Singleton in Top 30 as darkness cuts Monday play short

JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. – Libby Singleton recorded the lowest score thus far for the Charleston Southern women's golf individuals Monday but opening-day action was left unfinished due to darkness at the Briar's Creek Invitational at The Golf Club at Briar's Creek in nearby Johns Island, South Carolina.

ALL INDIVIDUALS
Due to a couple of late scratches for the Buccaneers, the squad was reduced to just four players and the quartet is competing as individuals in this event. Therefore, with Charleston Southern no longer in the team standings, it became a 17-team event.

SINGLETON MAKES LARGEST JUMP
The first-year Buc who transferred into the program this season from McLennan Community College was on her way to the largest climb of any individual in the 95-player field with a spectacular second round, only to need four holes to finish. Her 44-place leap was only matched by Illinois' Crystal Wang, the highest nationally-ranked player in the field at No. 25.

She carded a 2-under par 53 through 14 holes, featuring five birdies during her second time around the course. Her birdies came on the par-5, 514-yard No. 18, the par-4, 357-yard No. 3 and in three of her last-four holes, the par-4, 380-yard No. 6, par-5, 444-yard No. 7 and par-4, 353-yard No. 9.

Singleton had posted a 6-over 78 during the opening round, tallying a birdie on No. 18 to go with 11 pars, including four-in-a-row from No. 3 through No. 6. She had another stretch of three straight, wrapped around making the turn from No. 8 through No. 10.

FRIBERG STACKS PARS IN ROUND ONE
Isabell Friberg registered two scores on her first-round holes, either par or bogey, on her way to a 7-over 79. She began with a par on the par-4, 388-yard No. 13 and added another on the par-4, 380-yard No. 16. After making the turn, she turned in pars in a five-hole stretch from No. 1 through No. 5 before a two sets of back-to-back pars over her last-six holes.

In round two, she continued the momentum with seven pars among her first-nine holes before trading bogies for pars starting at No. 4. She has three holes to play in the second round and is at 7-over par 66 down the home stretch.

FINAL TWO INDIVIDUALS
Erica Whitehouse and Kathryn Thorne are the other two wearing blue and gold out on the course this week. Whitehouse capped her first round with a 10-over par 82 and is currently scoring a 6-over par 70 with two holes remaining after dropping in a birdie on No. 9.

Thorne mixed four birdies into her first round, coming in under par on No. 16, the par-3, 128-yard No. 2, No. 7 and No. 9 but a multitude of bogies and a couple double bogies left her at an 8-over 80 to start the day. She has three holes to go to complete her second 18, and thus far, has found pars on eight holes, including each of the last three she finished, from No. 7 through No. 9. She has notched a 12-over par 71 with those three holes to play.

TUESDAY ACTION
The tournament will pick up Tuesday morning with everyone completing what is left of their second round before third-round action gets underway immediately.
