Trek to Rock Hill brings softball back to league play

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern opens a stretch with four of its last-five Big South series on the road this weekend as it stays in-state for a three-game set with Winthrop on ESPN+ in Rock Hill. The two league contemporaries square off in a Saturday doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. followed by a single game Sunday, also with a 1 p.m. first pitch.

TRAVELING MODE
The Buccaneers have just three dates – five games – left this spring at CSU Softball Complex as the regular season hits the final month. The Bucs are scheduled to be at their home field for a non-conference doubleheader April 12 against Furman and then a league series with North Carolina A&T April 22-23.

Other than those three days, Charleston Southern will be on the road the rest of the way until the league tournament in mid-May. That stretch includes conference series this weekend at Winthrop, at USC Upstate (April 15-16), at Radford (April 29-30) and at Hampton (May 6-7) as well as a non-conference doubleheader in Mt. Pleasant against College of Charleston (April 20).

LOOKING FOR SEPARATION
The Bucs enter the weekend with a 16-19 overall and 5-7 conference ledger. The league mark places them currently in a four-way tie for fifth place with Gardner-Webb, Radford and Winthrop at the midway point of the Big South calendar. CSU owns a tiebreaker over Gardner-Webb, claiming two of the three games. The Runnin' Bulldogs are at Presbyterian this weekend, while Radford is at Longwood.

CAN WE GET TO 7?
Charleston Southern is coming off a five-inning triumph over Georgia Southern Wednesday afternoon, as inclement weather forced the teams off the field early, but after the contest was official, put the win in the Buccaneers' column. It marked the fifth time this spring in which the Bucs had a game ended after five innings and the second straight resulting in a victory.

SCOUTING WINTHROP
The Eagles carry an 11-25 overall record and 5-7 league record into the weekend but have lost their last eight, dating back to the last triumph, a 3-1 Big South decision at Hampton in the first game of a doubleheader March 25.

SERIES HISTORY
The two programs have met over 100 times in the all-time series, dating back to 1987, with CSU earning just one victory in the last-five outings. Charleston Southern earned a 4-2 win in the first clash, March 7, 1987.
