CSU to meet PC in tournament’s first game

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charleston Southern softball will look to extend its four-game winning streak when it begins play this week in the Big South Tournament, held at Longwood in Farmville, Virginia. The Buccaneers earned the No. 5 seed in the six-team field and will clash with No. 4-seed Presbyterian in the first game of the double-elimination bracket at Noon Wednesday on ESPN+.

RECENT SUCCESS
The Buccaneers concluded the regular season 26-26 overall and 12-13 in league play following a sweep at Hampton over the weekend, climbing into the No. 5 spot in the standings. The four-game win streak is tied for the second-longest active span by any school, joining Radford and trailing a six-game stretch by the host Lancers.

SEASON SERIES VS. BLUE HOSE
The two programs met April 1-2 at the CSU Softball Complex with Presbyterian taking the series win by claiming two of the three contests. The lone Bucs triumph was a 5-3 decision in game two as they scored four runs in the bottom of the third to build an early lead then used an insurance run in the fifth to help create separation in the late innings, giving Blake Holtorf the victory in the circle. SeaEnna Satcher had three RBI and she was one of four players with multiple hits.

TOP-FIVE IN THE STANDINGS
Charleston Southern returned to a top-five spot in the final regular-season league standings for the first time since 2019 and the 14th overall time in school history since the conference started sponsoring the sport in 1988. CSU finished as high as second in 1989 and tying for second in 2001, earning the No. 2 tournament seed both times.

The Buccaneers are the No. 5 seed in the championships for the sixth time in school history, joining the 1993, 2000, 2010, 2015 and 2019 squads. Seventeen times over the years has put Charleston Southern among the top-five seeds in the tournament.

SCOUTING PC
Presbyterian topped USC Upstate in the regular-season finale Saturday afternoon, snapping a two-game skid and giving it eight victories in its last-10 games to cap its campaign with a 34-13 overall and 19-8 league ledger under fourth-year head coach David Williams.

TOURNAMENT SERIES HISTORY
Wednesday's game will mark the seventh contest between the two programs in the Big South Championships with CSU owning the upper hand, 4-2. Charleston Southern won the first-four meetings, in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014 before the Blue Hose rebounded to claim the last-two matchups in 2015 and 2016.

FORMAT OF THE EVENT
The six-team tournament is double elimination with championship day set for Saturday. Action begins at Noon Wednesday with the winner advancing to Thursday's opener, also at Noon, against top-seed USC Upstate. The loser falls into the other side of the bracket, having to win out to reach Saturday. That journey begins with an elimination game against the loser of game two, tentatively set for 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, between No. 3 seed Longwood and No. 6 seed Radford.
