Bucs Drop Home Conference Game in 5-Set Affair

The Charleston Southern Buccaneers suffered their first conference loss of the season to the Campbell Fighting Camels in a tough battle that went five sets. The Bucs took two of the first three sets before falling in the final two.

In the first set, the Bucs won a close one by a 25-23 score. After falling behind 8-3 to begin the day, CSU fought back with two separate runs. Down 15-11, Angelika Rusin had five-straight points, putting the Bucs ahead. Then, two straight kills by Peyton Thompson made it 20-16. Thompson would then add three more kills to give CSU set one. She finished the day with 24 kills, which were the most between the two teams.

In set two, the Fighting Camels came crawling back, taking set two 25-21. They took a 14-8 lead to start the match. Charleston Southern would not go down though, as they went on a late run and cutt the Fighting Camel lead to 18-17; however, it was not enough, as Campbell went on a 6-0 run that included two kills and four attack errors.

Set three went to Charleston Southern in a dominating 25-17 affair. It was a close battle throughout most of it; however, the Bucs finshed the set on a 9-3 run. Skylar Yates had two kills during that run to help the Bucs to within reach.

With the momentum on the side of the Bucs, the Fighting Camels did not go down without a fight, as they gained the momentum in set four by the same score of 25-17. Campbell started the match on a 10-2 run that would prove to be too much for CSU to overcome. As for set five, despite a valuant comeback effort by Charleston Southern, their rally fell just short, as Campbell took the set 15-13 and the match 3-2.

For the Bucs, Rusin led both teams with 24 digs on the evening, and Emilee Karlsee led the team in assists with 41. You can catch Rusin and Karlsee next Friday, September 30 as the the Bucs look to get back on track against Radford. This game will start at 4 p.m. and will take place in Radford, VA.
