Softball Returns Home for a Battle with Towson

CHARLESTON, S.C. - After a mid-week battle with No. 14 Duke, the Charleston Southern softball team returns home this weekend to take on the Towson Tigers.

It all begins on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. followed by game two. The series concludes on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start time. This game will be streamed on ESPN+. Charleston Southern (4-4) looks to get back on track after dropping their last three games.

Towson
After their first five games of the season were canceled due to rain, the Tigers kicked off their season last weekend in the Furman Tournament, winning three out of five. They defeated Bellarmine, Furman and Sacred Heart while falling to Binghamton twice.

A member of the Colonial Athletic Conference, the Tigers were picked to finish eighth in the preseason polls. The team returns star players in Mackenzie Lake and Briana Ramirez, who were both named to the CAA Preseason Watch List. Ramirez was First-Team All-Conference one year ago.

The Tigers are led by Head Coach Lisa Costello, who is beginning her 28th season as Head Coach for Towson. Last year, she surpassed the 750-career win mark with a win over Villanova on March 16th. Up until 2019, she led the program to 21-consecutive seasons of 20 wins, including a 42-win season in 2018. The Tigers, however, experienced a down year in 2022, going just 14-33 (4-16 in conference) and did not qualify for their conference tournament.

Charleston Southern
Despite two rain delays last Friday, the Bucs were able to host the CSU Buc Up Tournament last weekend, going 3-2 in the process. They started the tournament off 2-0 before falling to UMass on Saturday and Providence in the final game last Sunday. They were only able to get one game in on opening weekend, defeating Merrimack 3-0.

RHP Annah Junge has picked up where she left off from last year, as she is the reigning Big South Pitcher of the Week. The Tallin, MO native went 2-0 in the CSU Buc Up Tournament last weekend with a 1.21 ERA. So far this season, she has pitched in 5 games (4 GS) and has a 3-1 record with an ERA of 2.57. Opponents are hitting just .162 off of her.

The Bucs look to get the bats going this weekend. Through the first eight games of the 2023 season, they are hitting just .183 and have a slugging percentage of .269. Senior, Lacy Johnson has led the way with a .286 batting average and three RBI. As a team, the Bucs are averaging just over three runs per game.
