Weekend Plans Change as Bucs Head to Radford

CHARLESTON, S.C. - After a week off, the Charleston Southern softball team heads to Radford, Virginia this weekend to take on the Highlanders.

The schedule has been updated, as there will now be a single game on Saturday as well as a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch on Saturday will be at 4 p.m. and the first game on Sunday will start at 12 p.m.

Charleston Southern (11-17, 1-4 in conference) will look to to build off of their victory over Gardner-Webb last Saturday, where Raleigh Lewis' late two-run home run carried them to their first conference win.

Lewis also looks to build off of her success, as she was named Big South Player of the Week going 6 for 10 last week. The Bucs went 2-1 with wins over Coastal Carolina and Gardner-Webb. In both of those wins, Lewis played a huge part. She knocked in the game-tying run and scored the go-ahead run in the win over the Chanticleers, and her home run against the Bulldogs sparked the Bucs last Saturday.

Also for the Bucs, Riley Lauffer pitched the best two games of her young career last week against Coastal Carolina and Gardner-Webb. The freshman from Peoria, Arizona went 0-1 in those two games with a 3.04 ERA. She allowed 2 runs in 9.2 innings pitched.

As a team, the Bucs own a team ERA of 4.47, which is sixth in the conference. They are led by Annah Junge, who is 10-5 with a 2.51 ERA in 18 appearances (15 GS) this season. She has already won Pitcher of the Week one time this season.

On the offensive side of the ball, CSU is hitting .218 on the season, which is last in the Big South. In conference play, they are hitting .246. They have been led by Cadence Walding, who is hitting .500 in Big South play. She is 7 for 14 with two doubles and an RBI. Harper Schoeneweis is the team leader in RBI with 11, but Ashley Meckley is right behind her with 8 RBI.

The Bucs have prided themselves on clean softball this season. They are third in the Big South with .964 fielding percentage. They have made just 28 errors in 2023.

Scouting the Opponent
Led by Alisa Tasler, who is in her second season in Radford, the Highlanders come into this weekend with a 9-18 (0-3 in conference) record. This will be just their third game at home, where they own a 2-0 record. They snapped a five-game losing streak this past Wednesday with a win over Western Carolina.

Radford, who was picked to finish seventh in the conference during the preseason, looks for their first conference win of the year. They were swept at the hands of Winthrop last week, dropping all three games by a 2-1 score.
