Junge Shuts Out Spartans in Game One; Bucs Shut Out in Game Two

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern softball team went 1-1 on Wednesday, splitting a doubleheader against the UNC Greensboro Spartans.

The Bucs (9-9) were able to to get a 3-0 win behind Annah Junge's complete game, one-hit shutout but fell victim to the Spartans (13-8) bounce-back performance in a 12-0 loss.

Game One
The Bucs were able to jump on the Spartans early in the ball game, scoring two runs in the first inning. Ashley Meckley got the inning started with a single and a stolen base. Two batters later, Harper Schoeneweis knocked her in to make it 1-0.

Later in the inning, Junge helped herself out by singling to left field for the game's second run, but Schoeneweis was thrown out at home to keep it a 2-0 game.

Neither team scored again until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Schoeneweis did it again with an RBI single. She finished the game 2 for 3 with two RBI.

For the fourth time this season, Junge pitched a complete-game shutout. Her record improved to 8-1 on the season, as she went 7.0 innings, allowing one hit, one walk and striking out eight.

Game Two
The Bucs were unable to find the same success in game two, as the Spartans jumped on them early, sending eight batters to the plate and scoring two runs. Riley Lauffer walked four batters and surrendered a hit in the inning.

UNC Greensboro added to their led in the third inning, when a solo home run by the pitcher made it 3-0, which is where the score stayed until the top of the fifth inning, when the Spartans exploded for nine runs.

Lauffer took the loss to fall to 1-8 on the season. She went 5.0 innings allowing six runs on six hits and walking five. Maggie Carpenter came into the game in relief and faced six batters, allowing four walks, one hit and six runs.

Bucs pitching allowed seven hits, but tied a season high in runs given up with 12. They walked a season-high nine batters.
