CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern softball team returned home on Friday against the Presbyterian Blue Hose, splitting a twin bill with a 5-3 victory in game one and a 6-2 victory in game two.
Game One
Presbyterian (24-16, 5-8 in conference) came out firing in the first inning, scoring three runs in the first inning off of
Annah Junge, who gave up a three-run home run. After that, she allowed just two hits in 6.0 shutout innings.
The Bucs (18-25, 7-9 in conference) scored at least one run in each of the first three innings, getting a run back in the bottom of the first inning with a sac fly by
Charlee Yourman.
It did not stop there, as
Gracie Prince made it a 3-2 game with her third home run of the season that went just out of reach of the leaping center fielder. Then, back-to-back bunt singles and a double steal by
BriAnna Brooks and
Weslin Jones allowed
Ashley Meckley to tie the game with a sac fly of her own.
The scoring continued in the bottom of the third inning, as Prince made it 4-3 with an RBI single. Then, a throwing error put a runner in scoring position, and the Bucs got an unearned run thanks to a walk by Meckley with the bases loaded.
Junge picked up her 16
th win of the season to improve to 16-7 on the year. She went 7.0 innings, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits, 3 walks and 9 strikeouts. Prince was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI.
Game Two
Once again, the Blue Hose jumped out to a lead early, scoring four runs in the top of the second inning and sending nine batters to the plate. Back-to-back doubles and an error made it 4-0.
That is where the score stayed for most of the game, as the Bucs did not pick up their first hit of the game until the bottom of the sixth inning, when
Harper Schoeneweis lined a two-out single into left field. Yourman followed that up with a two-run double to cut the deficit to two and putting the Bucs on the board.
Presbyterian would get both runs back in the top of the seventh inning with two solo home runs off of
Riley Lauffer, who took the loss to fall to 2-17 on the season. She allowed 6 runs (4 earned), 7 hits, 5 walks and 4 strikeouts in the loss.
