CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Buccaneers completed a 14-point halftime comeback over Radford on Wednesday night by a final score of 58-57.
A'lahn Sumler led all players in scoring as he finished with 24 points, marking his 6
th game of the season with 20 or more points.
The teams battled for the entire first half of the game, with the Bucs clipping the Highlanders' lead to 26-25 with less than five minutes to play. The visitors were able to stretch out a small run to bump their edge up to 38-31 heading into the break.
At the start of the second half, the Bucs were still struggling to find their shooting touch as the Highlanders found themselves ahead by 14 points, their most of the game with 12 minutes to play. At that point, the Bucs started to find their groove and cut into the deficit.
For a five-and-a-half-minute stretch, Charleston Southern went on a 13-1 scoring run with eight offensive rebounds during it. With 5:35 to play after Sumler's fourth three-pointer and 20
th point of the night, the team cut their deficit to a point, trailing 55-54. Radford scored on their ensuing possession to bring their lead to 57-54 with just a tick over five minutes remaining.
The Buccaneers held the Highlanders scoreless for the rest of the night, closing the gap to a point off a mid-range jumper by Sumler with 1:48 left. Another defensive stop led to a CSU timeout that saw Sumler score again and give the Bucs their first lead of the game in over 30 minutes.
Sumler led the team with his 24 on the night.
Taje' Kelly was next up with 13 points to go with 10 boards, totals which brought him over 1000 career points and 500 career rebounds.
DJ Patrick added ten points as well, drilling a trio of three-pointers in as many tries at the start of the game.
RJ Johnson finished with eight.
Reginald Duhart Jr. had a career night on the glass, bringing down 12 rebounds, the most in his career. As a team, the Bucs finished with a 42-38 edge on the boards.
Charleston Southern had one of the best defensive halves in recent memory in the second half as they limited Radford to just 19 points, half of what they had in the first to go with an 8-27 clip from the floor. For the whole game, the Highlanders did not make a single three-pointer, going 0-9 from deep.
The Buccaneers will be back in action on Saturday for the regular season finale with the Blue Hose. Charleston Southern will look to avenge their loss to Presbyterian (5-10) that opened the conference slate back in early January with seeding for the Hercules Tires Big South Tournament on the line.
