CHARLESTON – The Buccaneers' Women's Track and Field team began their outdoor season on Friday as they were the hosts for the CSU Buccaneer Invitational presented by East Bay Deli.
Chloe Greene opened the day by taking first overall in the javelin with her best throw of the day coming in at 44.83m. She was just less than a meter off her personal best in the event.
The first event on the track was the 4x100 which the Buccaneers cruised through in with a time of 46.24 for it, defeating a strong squad from South Carolina State in the process.
In the 2K steeplechase, Charleston Southern had a pair of freshmen make their outdoor debuts in
Elizabeth Shaylor and
Katrina Husby. Shaylor ran well with a time of 7:24.12 and was behind teammate,
Taylar White who took second with a time of 7:13.33.
Destiny Wallace won the prelims for the 100m with a time of 11.72 but took third in the finals crossing at 11.91.
In the 100m hurdles, Charleston Southern showed their dominance in the event, taking the top three spots on collegiate finishers.
Austyn Koppe was second overall with a time of 14.22 followed by
Chloe Greene and
Jewel Ash at 14.60 and 14.61.
Amaya Johnson had one of the team's most historic performances in her outdoor debut with the team. She had a time of 55.81 to take first place and place herself 9
th in the school's all-time record books for the event.
Maddie St. Louis and
Sophia Cupp each took top-six finishes in it.
In the 400m hurdles, Charleston Southern went 1-5 in the event. Ash won the event with a time of 60.73 and Greene was right behind with a time of 61.50 for a new personal best. This time moved her into 7
th in program history.
Brenda du Toit was third at 61.60.
Grenisha Thomas and Koppe were the next ones across at 63.45 and 63.92.
In the 200m, the Buccaneers placed three runners in the top five for the event including the event champion in
Dylann Core. She finished with a time of 24.73 on her way to taking first overall.
One of the headlines for the day came in the women's 800m with
Anne Akagi breaking her own school record in the event and winning the event as well. She shattered her old record and finished today with a 2:09.47. She was followed closely by
Freya Buglass who now sits in second place for the event in her outdoor track debut at 2:11.54.
In the 1500m, Charleston's Southern
Sarah McCartney won the event, but competed unattached. If the time were to have counted, she would have broken the school record for the event with her time of 4:28.38.
Emma James and
Keerstin Augustin had solid showings in it as well with time of 4:39.73 and 4:40.75. James' time ranks as 7
th in school history now.
Layla Senter won the hammer throw and moved way up the school leaderboard in the event as she now sits at 4
th on it. Her best throw was 51.47m to take the title to mark a new personal best.
Zemaya Carson took the individual title for the discus as she broke her own school record setting a new personal best in the process. She had a 50.07m for new career best.
Charleston Southern returns to the track next weekend as they will be competing in the Weems-Baskin Invitational hosted by South Carolina on Friday and Saturday.
