NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. -
Nealy Lamb threw her second compete-game shutout on Sunday afternoon, as the Charleston Southern softball team picked up their first conference win in a doubleheader split of the USC Upstate Spartans. The won the first game 1-0 while falling in game two by a 9-5 score.
Game One
Lamb gave up just one hit early in the game in route to her seventh win of the season with an eight-strikeout performance. Charleston Southern (14-13, 1-0 in conference) broke the 0-0 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly from
Emma Villaescusa.
Game Two
After
Annah Junge got out of the first inning unscathed with a bases-loaded strikeout, the Bucs (14-14, 1-1 in conference) got things going early, as they took a 2-0 lead with three hits in the first inning.
Harper Schoeneweis broke the tie with an RBI single to left and took second base on the throw. Then,
Lacy Johnson made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly.
The Spartans (13-14, 3-2 in conference) answered quickly, scoring three runs in the top of the second inning. They chased Junge out of the game in the fifth inning, scoring four more runs to take a 7-2 lead.
Junge took the loss to fall to 4-6 on the season. She went 4.0+ innings allowing seven runs and a career-high 14 hits before giving way to
Riley Lauffer.
The Bucs made an effort to make a comeback with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, as Johnson hit another sacrifice fly, and
Gracie Prince lined a double to centerfield. In the bottom of the sixth,
Jordyn Dimond cut the Spartan lead to two with an RBI single.
After allowing two more runs in the seventh inning, Lauffer finished her outing allowing two runs on two hits in 3.0 innings.
Madelyne Lee, Schoeneweis and
Linley Jones were all 2 for 4 in game two, as the Bucs tied a season high in hits with 12.
On Deck
The rubber match of this three-game series will conclude tomorrow at 4 PM on ESPN+, as the Bucs will try to take the series from the Spartans.
