RALEIGH – Charleston Southern sent their distance crew and throwers to compete in one of the nation's best annual meets, the Raleigh Relays this weekend. It was held from Thursday-Saturday with North Carolina State University playing host for it.
The team saw some of their best performances at the meet from
Sam Waldin and
Ben Thomas in their races. Waldin was the lone Buccaneer in the 10K and finished with a time of 29:23.09 to take 6
th in the first heat. With his time, he moved up from 4
th to 3
rd in the record book for the event, dropping over 30 seconds from his personal best.
Thomas competed in the 3K steeplechase and now sits in 6
th in CSU history for the event. He finished with a time of 9:08.38 taking 8
th in the third heat.
Jeff Wedding also ran in the steeple but in heat #1 taking 7
th in it and recorded a time of 9:13.51.
Odin Ferency,
Aaron Pierce and
Landry Polk each traveled for the throwing events and battled through tough conditions in them. Pierce and Polk each topped 50 meters in the javelin throw with Pierce recording a best of 56.31m for 16
th overall.
Charleston Southern also fielded runners in the 800m and 1500m.
Griffin Gillespie had a personal best in the 800 with a time of 1:55.29. In the 1500,
Jack McGahey had a time of 3:52.16 for a season best.
The team returns to the track from Thursday, April 11 through Saturday, April 13 to compete in the Duke Invitational. During this weekend, the team's throwers will make a short drive to Orangeburg, S.C. for the Sharona-Coleman Singleton Classic.
