NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. -
Riley Lauffer picked up her second win of the season with 5.0 shutout innings on Tuesday night, as the Charleston Southern softball team cruised to a 5-0 victory over the College of Charleston Cougars at CSU Softball Field.
Lauffer allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out a batter, and both
Weslin Jones and
Carsten Sandvig had two RBI to push the Bucs (21-21, 7-5 in conference) back to .500.
Charleston Southern got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning, as
Weslin Jones led the inning off with a walk. After
Harper Schoeneweis walked, runners were at the corners. Schoeneweis bluffed towards second base and forced a throw, allowing Jones to steal home and score the game's first run.
The Bucs added to their lead with three runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Emma Villaescusa began the inning with a single. Then, back-to-back doubles from
Madelyne Lee and Sandvig made it 3-0. Two batters later, Jones continued her strong night with an RBI single that scored Sandvig.
Jones did it again in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring Sandvig on an RBI single. Sandvig and Jones each were 2 for 2 with a walk.
Annah Junge closed out the ballgame with 2.0 shutout innings and two strikeouts.
This is the third shutout in four games for the Buccaneer pitching staff and second shutout in a row. This is the second year in a row in which Charleston Southern has shut out their opponent two games in a row. Overall, the Buccaneer pitching staff has nine shutouts for the season, which is the most in the Big South.
Currently, the Bucs are tied for fourth most shutouts in a single season in school history. The most in a single season is 15, which was accomplished by the 2001 team.
