ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Winthrop Eagles evened the three-game series with the Charleston Southern softball team on Saturday, as they cruised to a six-inning, 9-1 win over the Buccaneers at Terry Field.
Game one was all Eagles (19-26, 6-8 in conference), as they exploded for three in the first inning off of
Riley Lauffer, sending seven batters to the plate.
Winthrop added three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, as a solo home run began the inning. Then, they took advantage of a throwing error by the Bucs (22-22, 8-6 in conference) and scored two more runs to make it 6-0.
The game ended in the bottom of the sixth inning, as a walk off home run by the Eagles gave them the 9-1 victory. Lauffer suffered the defeat for the Bucs to fall to 2-4. She went 5.2 innings allowing a season-high nine runs (eight earned) on 11 hits and eight strikeouts.
Nealy Lamb was cruising through the second game of the doubleheader, as nine up, nine down went the Eagles through the first three innings.
The game was halted at the beginning of the top of the fourth inning due to inclement weather including hail. It will continue at a later date.
Charleston Southern will pick up where they left off in a previously rescheduled game due to rain against South Carolina, as the Buccaneers will take on the Gamecocks on Tuesday in Columbia. Action was stopped in the top of the second inning on March 27.
