Bucs Extend Winning Streak to Five with Doubleheader Sweep of Jaspers

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston Southern softball team continued their winning ways this weekend, as they took down the Manhattan Jaspers on Saturday with a 5-4 win in game one and a 7-5 win in game two at CSU Softball Field.
 
 
Game One
The Buccaneers (8-7) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning off the bats of Emma Villaescusa and Jordyn Dimond. After Blakely Kingsmore and Carsten Sandvig singled, Villaescusa went the opposite field and made it a 1-0 game. Dimond reached on a fielder's choice, which scored Sandvig to make it 2-0.
 
The Buccaneers scored in both the fourth and fifth inning. After Dimond led the inning off with a walk, Emma Smith brought her home with an RBI single. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Senior Weslin Jones hit her first-career home run, making it a 4-1 game with a solo shot to right field. In the circle, Riley Lauffer made it through 5.0 innings while only allowing one run but ran into trouble in the top of the sixth inning. The Jaspers (0-7) scored three runs in the sixth inning to tie the game at four.
 
Charleston Southern responded quickly, scoring one in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Back-to-back errors by the Jaspers put runners at second and third with nobody out. After Jasper pitching struck out two Buccaneers in a row, Weslin Jones continued her successful day at the plate, scoring Linley Jones from third base on an RBI single.
 
Lauffer earned the win for the Buccaneers, throwing 6.0 innings while allowing four runs (2 ER) on five hits while striking out two. Mackenzie Rutkoff picked up the save for the Buccaneers, throwing 1.0 shutout inning. Weslin Jones and Sandvig each had two hits for the Buccaneers at the plate.
 
Game Two
After falling behind 1-0, the Buccaneers were able to gain the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. After a triple from Kingsmore, Sandvig followed that up with an RBI double the opposite way. Two batters later, Dimond was able to reach on an error by the shortstop, scoring Sandvig.
 
The Buccaneers were able to add some insurance in the bottom of the sixth inning, scratching across five runs and sending nine batters to the plate. Kingsmore got on base with a bunt single and stole second. Two batters later, Villaescusa singled to the pitcher and took second base on a throwing error by the first baseman. After that, the Buccaneers played the stationary game, hitting four-straight singles to make it 7-1.
 
 Kinsey Clopton picked up her third win of the season to improve to 3-3. She ran into some trouble in the final inning and was replaced by Mackenzie Rutkoff, who picked up her second save of the day while throwing the final 2/3 of an inning.
 
The Buccaneers will look for the series sweep on Sunday afternoon, as first pitch for game three against the Jaspers will be at 1:00 PM.
