CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern softball team provided their two most complete games on Saturday afternoon, sweeping the Presbyterian Blue Hose in their doubleheader and taking the series 2-1.
The Buccaneers (12-16, 2-1 in conference) took two from the Blue Hose (18-15, 3-3 in conference) behind two games that ended with walk offs, winning game two by a 10-2 score in five innings, followed by a 9-1 win in six innings in the rubber game.
Charleston Southern got two outstanding pitching performances from
Riley Lauffer and
Kinsey Clopton, who both gave complete-game performances.
Game Two
The Buccaneers raced out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. With one out,
Jordyn Dimond got things started with an opposite-field single and came around to score on an RBI double by
Carsten Sandvig.
Harper Schoeneweis followed that with a double of her own that brought home Sandvig and
Weslin Jones, who reached by a hit by a pitch. Then, after stealing third base, a throwing error by the Blue Hose catcher rolled into left field and allowed Schoeneweis to score.
After the Blue Hose scored one in the second inning, the Buccaneers responded with two more in the bottom half of the inning, as Schoeneweis once again delivered with a two-run single to make it 6-1.
Charleston Southern scored one in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Dimond led off with a triple and came around to score on an RBI single from
Weslin Jones. The Buccaneers ended the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with three runs. The inning started with back-to-back one-out singles from
Payton Smith and
Charlee Yourman, who both scored on a two-run double from pinch hitter
Linley Jones. A few batters later, Sandvig ended the game with a two-run double down the right field line.
Lauffer improved her record to 6-5 on the season with a 5.0 inning performance with two runs allowed on seven hits and four strikeouts. Schoeneweis was 2 for 3 in the game with four RBI, while Dimond had a 4 for 4 game with three runs scored. The Buccaneers tied a season high with 13 hits and scored a season-high 10 runs.
Game Three
The Buccaneers kept the bats going in the rubber game, as they took advantage of three Presbyterian errors in the bottom of the first inning. Blakely Kingsmore reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, who then threw the ball away to allow Kingsmore to reach second base. After getting to third base on a wild pitch, the ball got away from the third baseman on the throw to allow Kingsmore to score.
The Buccaneers scored two more in the bottom of the third inning, as Payton Smith led off with a walk and took third base on a single from Dimond, who took second base on the throw from the outfield. Two batters later, Weslin Jones made it 3-0 with a two-run single. After a Charlee Yourman double with one out in the fourth inning, Karley Hand came in to pinch run and scored on an RBI single from Kingsmore.
Charleston Southern scored two more in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Schoeneweis notched her second double of the afternoon to score Sandvig, and Emma Villaescusa hit an RBI single to make it 6-1.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Buccaneers needed three runs to end the game,and they got that from the bats of Dimond and Weslin Jones. Dimond slashed a triple down the right field line to make it 8-1, and Weslin Jones ended the game with a ground ball to shortstop.
In the circle, Clopton notched her second complete game of the season. With 6.0 innings pitched, she allowed five hits and struck out seven batters.
On Deck
The Buccaneers will have a six-day break and will hit the road for a three-game series next weekend against the Winthrop Eagles beginning next Friday at 5:00 PM. Following that will be a doubleheader with the Eagles beginning at 12:00 PM. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+.
