Bucs Split Saturday Doubleheader with Highlanders

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Riley Lauffer went the distance on Saturday, allowing just one unearned run as the Buccaneers took the final game of the three-game series against the Radford Highlanders by a 3-1 score.

After falling 8-2 in game one of the doubleheader, the Buccaneers (16-20, 5-4 in conference) avoided the sweep holding the Highlanders (21-19, 7-2 in conference) to just two hits.

Game One
After Kinsey Clopton allowed three walks in the second inning, the Highlanders got on the board first with an RBI single, but Emma Villaescusa threw out a runner trying to score from second base to preserve the 1-0 deficit.

The Highlanders held a 4-0 late in the game, but Villaescusa came to the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning and hit her second home run of the season to put the Buccaneers on the board.

Mackenzie Rutkoff pitched in relief for the Buccaneers and allowed four runs (2 ER) in 4.0 innings of work. Clopton suffered the defeat to fall to 6-6 on the season. She went 2.1 innings allowing three runs on three hits with four walks.

Game Two

In a pitcher's duel, it was Lauffer who came away with her eighth victory of the season, allowing just two hits and striking out three batters.

Weslin Jones broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning, lining a single into left field to score Jordyn Dimond, who was hit by a pitch to start the inning. The Buccaneers took advantage of a Highlander error in the bottom of the fifth inning. With runners on second and third and two outs, Harper Schoeneweis hit a ground ball that ate up the second baseman, allowing Dimond and Blakley Kingsmore to score to make it 3-0.

Lauffer ran into trouble in the top of the seventh inning, allowing two walks with one out. After a fielding error by the Buccaneers, the Highlanders scored their lone run of the game on a fielder's choice and put the tying run on first base. The next batter flew out to Weslin Jones in centerfield to give the Bucs the win.
