CHARLESTON, SC - The Charleston Southern softball team opened play at the Elon/UNCG tournament on Friday afternoon. The Bucs Fell to Indiana 9-1 before bouncing back to defeat UNC Greensboro 8-4.
GAME ONE
Charleston Southern set the tone early with a single from
Emma Smith to start the game.
Charlee Yourman drew a walk advancing Smith to second.
Carsten Sandvig singled down the right-field line bringing Smith home and giving the Bucs a 1-0 advantage over the Hoosiers.Â
Indiana responded with a run in the bottom of the first and eventually pulled away, holding the Bucs hitless over the next four innings.
Gianna Deluco started in the circle, pitching all four innings, allowing five hits with one strikeout.
GAME TWO
The Bucs struck early against the Spartans in Game Two.
Emma Smith singled in the second inning, followed by
Charlee Yourman.
Cadence Walding walked to load the bases with one out, but a double play ended the threat.
Charleston Southern broke through in the third inning.
Blakley Kingsmore and
Harper Schoeneweis singled, and
Jordyn Dimond loaded the bases with another hit.
Emma Smith's single to left-center scored Kingsmore and Schoeneweis, with
Olivia Chuck running for Smith.
Carsten Sandvig added a single down the left field line, bringing Dimond and Chuck home. The Bucs left the third with a 4-3 advantage over the Spartans.
In the fourth,
Maddie Lee walked and then stole second, marking her first stolen base of the season. Kingsmore followed with a walk, advancing Lee to third on a passed ball, then stole second herself.
Harper Schoeneweis grounded out to shortstop for an RBI, and
Jordyn Dimond's single to center scored Kingsmore.
Emma Smith added her third hit of the game, and
Carsten Sandvig's single loaded the bases with two outs.
Emily Chandler walked and brought Smith home, extending Charleston Southern lead 7-3.
The Bucs tacked on one more run in the fifth when Lee reached on a walk and scored on a Spartan throwing error as Dimond reached first. Sandvig added a hit in the sixth, and Kingsmore singled and stole her second base of the night in the seventh.Â
Riley Lauffer pitched six innings, allowing four runs with four strikeouts.
Brenna Conley came in to relieve Lauffer in the seventh, facing just two batters to close out the game.

Charleston Southern will travel to Greensboro, NC for day two of the Elon/UNCG tournament. The Bucs will face Indiana at 10:00 a.m. and Elon at 12:30 p.m.
