Tahou and Carson Claim Big South Individual Titles on Day One of Conference Championships

TYRON, N.C. – The first day of the Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships ended on Friday evening with the Buccaneers sitting in third place with 38 points. The day was highlighted by Zemaya Carson's win in the weight throw and Maeva Tahou's in the long jump.
 
The action began with Tahou in the long jump and on her fifth attempt of the day, she went 6.31m. This marked a new personal best, a meet record and a conference record. She cleared six meters on two of her other attempts as well. Overall, the top four finishers all had a personal best with their marks now ranking all inside the top six for the event in league history. Katelyn Grate also competed in the event and claimed ninth with her career best mark of 5.33m.
 
In the weight throw, Carson had a career best in the event by nearly a full meter, claiming the school record. She threw a 19.24m on her second attempt for the best of the day and had all four of her recorded attempts eclipse 18.75m, beating out her previous personal best and the former school record. The mark also ranks as the seventh-best in league history. Lily Rowan also competed in the event and claimed fourth with a 17.44m to slide up to fourth in school history.
 
Other finals on the day included the 5K and the distance medley relay. In the 5K, Giada D'Agostino ran a time of 17:44.66 for fifth and Elizabeth Shaylor got eighth with a 17:52.46 with both of their times ranking as personal bests. Their times rank as the sixth and ninth best in program history. In the DMR, they got edged out of first place by .01 of a second and had a season best time of 11:59.06 for the fourth-best time in school history.
 
In the prelims, the Bucs had a tremendous showing, advancing runners in all events. In the 60m hurdles, Tahou, Grenisha Thomas and Chloe Mae Wilks had times of 8.30, 8.46 and 8.51 for the fastest three times of the round and all marking a new personal best.
 
In the 400m dash, Maya Clark, Caroline Aslerin and Barbara de Kock advanced with the first, third and eighth best times of the round with their 54.57, 56.09 and 56.89. Thomas went through in the 60m dash with the day's fastest time of 7.55 for a season best.
 
The final prelims held during the day were the 200m and 800m. The 800m saw all three Bucs advance in Freya Buglass, Lucy McNamara and Sienna Rose with Rose's time marking a personal best and placing her inside the school's all-time top ten.  In the 200m, Charleston Southern saw four runners through to the finals. Tahou, Thomas, Clark and Aslerin were the ones to advance with their times of 24.49, 24.59, 24.66 and 25.04.
 
The second and final day of the Big South Indoor Championships continue tomorrow, Saturday February 28. The field events are scheduled to begin at 12:15 p.m. with the track ones slated for a 2:10 p.m. start.
