Bucs Split Home Conference Opener with Walk-Off Victory Over Longwood

CHARLESTON, SC - The Charleston Southern softball team opened conference play at home on Saturday afternoon against Longwood. The Buccaneers fell 6-5 in game one before bouncing back with a 5-4 walk-off victory in game two.

GAME ONE
Jordyn Dimond drew a lead off in the first inning before Harper Schoeneweis singled to right field advancing Dimond to scoring position. Carsten Sandvig reached on a fielder's choice and then stole second before Maddie Lee drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Emma Smith singled to left field, bringing Dimond and Sandvig in to score, giving the Bucs an early 2-0 lead.

In the second, Lorenzza Marcacci led things off with a single to left field, she then advanced to second on a ground out but was left on base.

Longwood responded in the third, scoring four runs to take a 4-2 lead.

Sandvig led things off in the third, drawing a walk and Lee followed with a single up the middle. Charlee Yourman singled through the left side and advanced to second on the throw, Lee advanced to third and Sandvig scored to cut the deficit to 4-3.

With the bases loaded and no outs in the fourth, Yourman turned a key double play to limit the damage, but the Lancers extended their lead to 6-3.

Dimond drew her second walk of the game in the fourth before advancing to second on a ground out. Schoeneweis singled to center field and advanced to second on the throw, bringing Dimond in to score. Sandvig tripled to right field, bringing Schoeneweis home to cut the deficit 6-5.

Smith singled to right field to start the fifth and Linley Jones entered as a pinch runner. Jones advanced to second on a ground out, and later to third on a wild pitch. Cadence Walding drew a walk and Villaescusa came in as a pinch runner. Diamond drew another walk to load the bases with two outs, however the Bucs were not able to get a run across. 

In the sixth, Schoeneweis drew a walk before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt. Smith also drew a walk but they were both left on base. 

Marcacci singled to center field in the seventh before Dimond doubled to center field. Kingsmore reached on a fielder's choice that advanced Dimond to third. Schoenweis drew a walk to load the bases with two outs, but all three runners were left stranded.

Riley Lauffer threw all seven innings for the Bucs allowing six runs with two strikeouts.

GAME TWO

Dimond, once again, drew a lead off walk in the first. and later scored on an RBI ground out from Sandvig to give the Bucs a 1-0 lead.

The Lancers responded with a solo home run to tie it 1-1 in the top of the second. 

In the second, Lorenzza Marcacci drew a walk but she was left on base.

Harper Schoeneweis singled to center field in the third, but was then thrown out at second. 

Longwood took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth.

Linley Jones singled in the fifth, followed by a single from Dimond but they were both left on base.

Schoeneweis doubled in the sixth before Emma Smith drew a walk. Olivia Chuck entered as a runner and a passed ball allowed both runners to advance. Charlee Yourman singled to center field and Schoeneweis and Smith both scored, tying the game 3-3. Yourman advanced to second on a wild pitch and Marcacci drew a walk, but both runners were left on base.
Longwood answered in the top of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Dimond drew her second walk of the game before Blakley Kingsmore singled to put the tying run in scoring position. After a fielder's choice, Sandvig came through with a single to center field, allowing Kingsmore to score and even the game. Schoeneweis later delivered the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly, sealing a 5-4 walk-off victory for the Buccaneers.

Kinsey Clopton went the distance in the circle for the Bucs, throwing all seven innings allowing four runs with six strikeouts. 

UP NEXT
The Buccaneers return to action on Sunday, March 22, to close out the series against Longwood. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
