Speirs Big Day Leads Bucs Past Spartans on Sunday

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Charleston Southern took the Sunday contest over USC Upstate to close out the weekend series by a final score of 11-3. The Bucs tallied nine runs in the final three innings to power them to the victory.
 
The Spartans tallied the first run of the game in the second inning. On a fielding error by the Bucs' first baseman which allowed Wylie Waters to score from second to give the hosts a 1-0 edge.
 
In the fourth, Charleston Southern's Gavin Speirs drove a double to the right field gap to score Garrison Barile and level it at one apiece. Later in the inning, Blake Edgmon had a sacrifice flyout to left field to bring Speirs home and put the Bucs ahead at 2-1.
 
In the seventh, the Buccaneer offense exploded to score five runs. After a pair of flyouts to begin the inning, the next six baserunners reached safely. Lucas Pringle was hit by a pitch to bring the first home, followed by a Barile single to center that cleared the bases following a fielding error and Speirs had his second RBI double of the day pushing the score to 7-1.
 
In the eighth, with two outs on the board and the bases loaded, Tyler Wright had a two RBI single to right center. This brought Kain Collins and Ean Czech home moving the scoreline to 9-1.
 
In the bottom half of the inning, USC Upstate had a leadoff single followed by a home run to left center by Waters to make it a 9-3 ballgame.
 
Charleston Southern had a ninth similar to the Spartans as Barile got aboard with a leadoff hit by pitch and Spiers brought him home on a two-run home run to right center. The Spartans were retired in order in the ninth, placing the final score at 11-3.
 
At the plate, Spiers led the team in hits and RBIs and with three and four on the day. As a squad, they finished with 11 hits as Czech and Collins each had two as well while Wright and Barile both had two RBIs. Additionally, they drew six walks with Collins and Caden Wolfley both having a pair of them.
 
On the mound, Matt Gallant started and threw the first 6.0 innings of the ballgame needed 103 pitches to do it. He gave up six hits and four walks while striking out four batters. He allowed just one run to cross home during his time on the mound with it being unearned. Hayden Henry was the first to be used out of the bullpen and he threw an inning allowing two to score. Drew Dawson completed the game throwing the final 2.0 innings and retired all six batters that he faced.
 
Charleston Southern will return to Nielsen Field @ CSU Ballpark for all four contests of this upcoming week. They host The Citadel on Tuesday, April 14th at 6 p.m. and follow it with a conference play weekend against High Point to be held from Friday through Sunday with the games to all be available live on ESPN+.
