CHARLESTON – The NCAA announced the participants for the NCAA East Regionals First Round on Thursday afternoon. The Buccaneers had a record total of selections with there being 11 events and nine student-athletes between the men's and women's teams. This year, the meet will be held on the campus of the University of Kentucky in Lexington.
Maeva Tahou qualified individually for three different events. She ranks 8th in the triple jump currently in the East Region with her personal best, school record and conference record mark of 13.34m set at the conference championships. She jumped 6.27 at the same meet in the long jump for a new school record and the second-best in Big South history as well and it ranks 27
th in the East region. She ran 13.24 in the 100m hurdles at the Charlotte Invitational which was the regular season finale for a school record and third-best in league history and 30
th in the East region.
The Buccaneers have a pair of runners going to the regionals for the 400m hurdles in
Grenisha Thomas and
Brenda du Toit who went 1-2 in the Big South Championships. Thomas has a season best time of 58.64 and du Toit had a career best of 58.73 which ranks as third-best in school history. Entering the meet, Thomas ranks 45
th in the region while du Toit is 49
th.
Charleston Southern also advanced their 4x400m relay squad to the first round with them ranking as the 23
rd best group in the East region. The relay consists of
Maya Clark, Thomas, Tahou and
Caroline Aslerin with them running a school record of 3:34.38 at the Charlotte Invitational which was the regular season finale and ranks as second-best in league history. The group ran together at the Big South Championships and won the event.
Zemaya Carson rounds out the entrees for the Bucs as she will be competing in the hammer throw at the meet. She threw a career best this past weekend at a Last Chance meet hosted by High Point with her going 58.54m on the day to break her school record in it once again. She will rank 48
th in the region entering the meet.
The NCAA First and Second Rounds will be held from Wednesday, May 27 through Saturday, May 30. The first round will cut the field of 48 down to 24 with the second round bringing it down to 12 with those to advance to the NCAA Championship which will be in Eugene, Oregon from Wednesday, June 10 through Saturday, June 13.
