High School: Matsumoto comes to Charleston, S.C. by way of Palatine, Ill. where she played at William Fremd High School under Coach Jim Weaver and she lined up in the outfield for the Beverly Bandits travel team under Coach Bill Conroy.

In her junior season, Matsumoto was named to the All-Conference, All-Area and All-State teams after breaking the single season stolen base mark at Fremd, as well as the single season runs scored record. She was also a key member of the Beverly Bandits squad that placed fifth at the PGF nationals and finished third in Boulder.
