CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern women's outdoor track and field had Buccaneers at two meets Friday, the Weems Baskin Invitational in Columbia and the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, North Carolina, and the squad came away with a school record, an event winner, five top-five results and a slew of new personal records and impressions in the all-time Top 10 listings.
ASH BLAZES NEW SPEED
In her first attempt at running the event during her outdoor career,
Jewel Ash set a new Charleston Southern standard in the 400-meter dash with her runner-up time of 54.04. The time, which also slotted her into the Big South's all-time Top-10 chart, topped the previous best of 54.39 set by Dionne Gibson at the 2008 Georgia Tech Invitational.
THREE MORE PRS IN RALEIGH
The track remained friendly for the Bucs in the North Carolina state capital, as three others also established new personal-record times.
Maddie St. Louis joined Ash in the 400-meter dash with her time of 56.93, while both participants in the 100-meter hurdles,
Chaneal Harris and
Chloe Greene, came away with their fastest times, as well. Harris' 14.00 ranks as the third-fastest time in school history.
EVENT WINNER IN COLUMBIA
Staying closer to home, Charleston Southern continued to see success with top-five times among its four competitors in two events, including
Sommer McKenzie winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 11:16.25, the sixth fastest in program history and a new personal-record time.
She edged out teammate
Anne Akagi for medalist honors, as Akagi finished as the runner-up with her own personal-record time of 11:35.82, the seventh-fastest time among the all-time Bucs.
LONGER DISTANCE, STILL BACK-TO-BACK
The other event in Columbia in which CSU had runners was in the 5000 meters.
Sarah McCartney placed fourth by crossing the finish line in 17:58.34, while
Zanelle Willemse set a new personal record and had the 10th-place time in program history with her fifth-place result of 18:09.41.
