CHARLESTON – Women's Cross Country continued their rise to the upper echelon of the Big South as they claimed the runners-up title at the Conference Championships on Friday morning. This ties their highest finish in school history as they finished in second place for the third consecutive fall.
The Buccaneers turned in a strong performance at the meet, but the High Point Panthers turned in a complete team run in order to claim their eighth consecutive title at the meet.
By the 3K checkpoint, High Point and Charleston Southern had solidified their placings as HPU had 22 while CSU had 42 at the time, well above third, Radford, with 93. The lead pack at the time had been dwindled down to CSU's
Keerstin Augustin and a trio of Panthers.
As they got to finish line, High Point's Brianna Malone was able to distance herself from the group and take the title for the second time in as many tries in her career with a time of 16:52.0.
Following her, Charleston Southern had their first finisher cross in
Keerstin Augustin with a time of 17:00.5 taking the individual runner-up honors and a new personal best. After her a pair of HPU runners in Charli Montalvo and Alyssa Hendrix took third and fourth. CSU's
Sarah McCartney then crossed the line for fifth in a time of 17:19.1.
HPU finished off their scoring shortly after taking sixth and eighth overall to finish with a score of 22 points. Sandwiched between that pair of Panthers, Elzabeth Shaylor turned in a tremendous race with a time of 17:41.3 for seventh overall.
The Buccaneers rounded out their scoring five with
Katrina Husby and
Sarah Jacobs in 12
th and 13
th with times of 18:02.3 and 18:04.6. This put the final team score of the Bucs at 39.
