LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Charleston Southern volleyball team dropped
a 3-0 decision (25-20, 25-14, 25-13) to Liberty Saturday, Oct. 2 at
the Vines Center in Lynchburg.
Liberty (13-7, 4-1 Big South) hit .406 as a team, sending down
48 kills, while CSU (6-12, 1-4) earned 25 kills at a .109 rate. The
Lady Bucs posted six team blocks, while Liberty recorded eight
blocks. LU collected 40 digs to CSU's 33.
Amanda Hill led the Lady Bucs with 10 kills, her 15th double-digit
kill match of the season. Amy Nokes paced CSU with 11 assists and
eight digs. Emily Libertowski earned two service aces, while Cori
Holeman added four blocks (one solo, three assists).
LU was led by Karyl Bacon's 11 kills, followed by Loren Thomas with
10 kills. Kelly Haseman paced all players with 18 digs.
Liberty started off set one strongly, surging to a 16-8 lead.
Kayla Klinger registered kills on two of the next three rallies,
but LU continued to stretch the lead to 20-10. Trailing 21-13, the
Lady Bucs responded with the next five points, four while
Libertowski served. Hill earned two kills, Holeman posted a solo
block, and Libertowski served two aces during the rally, bringing
CSU to within three points at 21-18. Liberty held on for 25-20
victory. LU hit .444 in set one with 19 kills, compared with a .143
performance from the Lady Bucs.
Set two saw then Lady Flames continue their hitting success, as
LU hit .467 as a team. For CSU, Hill connected for six kills,
hitting .500 for the set. Bacon added six kills for the home team.
The second set began with Hill earning the Lady Bucs first three
points with kills, and CSU trailed, 5-3. LU extended the edge to
10-4, leading to a CSU timeout. The Lady Flames continued the
momentum with an 11-5 rally to take a 21-9 lead, and took set two,
25-14.
The Lady Bucs built a quick 9-5 lead in set three, thanks in
part to three kills from Klinger, one each from Nokes and Hill, and
two blocks on which Holeman assisted. LU seized momentum with a
15-1 run, claiming a 20-10 lead on the way to a 25-13 set three
victory, winning the match, 3-0.
CSU will return to the Buc Dome Friday, Oct. 8 for a conference
match against UNC-Asheville, with the first serve set for 7 p.m.
The Bulldogs (10-7, 3-1 Big South), tied for second in the Big
South, were defeated 3-0 at High Point Saturday.
