HIGH POINT, N.C. - The Charleston Southern volleyball team
dropped a 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-19) decision at second-place High
Point Friday, Oct. 22. The Lady Bucs (9-15), competing on the road
for the fourth straight match, fell to 3-7 in conference play,
while the Panthers (13-11) are now 8-2 in Big South
competition.
For the evening, CSU was held to 25 kills at a .104 pace, while
High Point recorded 47 kills, hitting .209. The Panther posted 61
digs to the Lady Bucs' 52, and held a 7-2 advantage in service
aces.
CSU's Amanda Hill earned her 15th double-double of the season
with 11 kills and 13 digs. She is now four kills shy of 5th
all-time in the Big South, with 1,757. Friday marked the 10th match
in a row in which Hill has reached double-digits in kills.
Tricia Rodl posted a team-high 17 digs for the second
consecutive match, entering third place at CSU with 1,275 digs.
Rodl also added two service aces.
Cori Holeman registered five block assists to lead all players,
while Emily Libertowski recorded seven digs and two blocks. Amy
Nokes posted 24 assists.
High Point's Megan Smith posted a match-high 17 kills, while
Maddie Simpson contributed a double-double with 40 assists and 10
digs. Julie Hershkowitz had a match-high 18 digs.
In set one, High Point quickly earned a 6-3 lead, but two kills
by Crissy Skokan kept the score close at 7-5. Leading 14-10, HPU
pulled away with a 9-0 rally on the way to a 25-13 first-set
victory. The Panthers hit .387 as a team compared with CSU's
.111.
The second set was evenly played, as the score was tied at 5-5,
and again at 9-9 following a 3-0 CSU rally which featured to kills
by Hill. After several rally points, CSU took the lead at 15-14 on
a block by Holeman and Libertowski. High Point scored the ensuing
seven points to take a 21-15 lead. CSU battled back, but HPU took
the second set, 25-21, with each team hitting around .110. Hill
connected for six kills during the middle frame.
The Panthers stormed out to a 12-7 lead early in the third set
before the Lady Bucs responded with an extended run. CSU outscored
High Point, 9-2, over the next 11 serves for a 16-14 edge. Rodl
served two aces, Hill and Holeman earned one kill apiece and
Holeman assisted on two blocks during the rally. High Point bounced
back, staging an 8-0 rally on the way to a 22-16 lead and 25-19
victory to seal the match.
CSU Head Coach Danyel Bellush said, "I'm glad we were able to
re-group today. We had a few key people really step up during the
match. We're happy to get the win."
The Lady Bucs conclude their five-match away stretch Saturday at
Radford, with the Dig Pink contest beginning at 4 p.m. High Point
plays host to Winthrop Saturday at 2 p.m.
