CHARLESTON, S.C. - On a night in which Amanda Hill broke a pair
of records, Charleston Southern earned a 3-1 (25-18, 25-11, 26-28,
25-17) victory over Gardner-Webb. The Lady Bucs (12-18, 6-9 Big
South) built a 2-0 lead before G-W (5-25, 0-15) forced a fourth set
with a 28-26 set three win.
Hill entered the match two kills shy of breaking her own
single-season program kills record of 499, set in 2008. She earned
her 500th kill on the season early in the first set, and finished
with 12 kills on the night. Hill also broke the program record for
career sets played, with 477, passing Sam Sasan (475) on
Friday.
CSU hit .232 on the evening, recording 54 kills to the Runnin'
Bulldogs' 40. The Lady Bucs registered a season-high nine aces and
posted 11 team blocks while G-W recorded six. Gardner-Webb led in
digs, 61-59.
For the second match in a row, Hill and Kayla Klinger posted
double-doubles. Klinger led the way for CSU with her third
double-double, sending down 14 kills and collecting 13 digs. Hill
added 19 digs to her 12 kills for her 19th double-double of the
season and 65th of her career.
Amberle Trinder paced all players with six blocks, also
contributing eight kills. Amy Nokes dished out 42 assists and added
four blocks and a match-high three aces. Cori Holeman earned four
rejections and seven kills, while Erin LaVenice registered a
season-high five kills on eight attempts (.625) to go with three
blocks.'
Molly Rhyne led Gardner-Webb with 13 kills, also adding eight
digs. Lauren Evans posted nine kills and 12 digs, and Evan Moffitt
paced the Runnin' Bulldogs with 38 assists.
CSU broke open a tightly-contested first set, which featured 11
ties and seven lead changes, with a 5-0 run, taking a 19-14 lead.
Trinder and Holeman posted kills during the rally, while Holeman
and Hill forced one of three G-W attack errors. An Evans kill
halted the rally, but the Lady Bucs scored the next three points,
capped by a Holeman kill, and led 22-15. A pair of CSU errors made
the score 22-17. Klinger subsequently posted a pair of kills around
an Emily Libertowski ace to win the set, 25-18.
The Lady Bucs dominated at the net during the second set,
hitting .565 while earning 13 kills on 23 attempts with no errors.
Gardner-Webb connected at a .036 pace, as CSU registered four
blocks. Charleston Southern earned a 25-11 victory, tied for its
widest margin of victory in a set this season. The Lady Bucs also
beat Coastal Carolina, 25-11, in set three Tuesday, Nov. 2.
Holding a 2-0 lead in the match, CSU looked to close things out
with a victory in set three. However, the third set ended in a
28-26 Gardner-Webb victory, forcing a fourth set to be played.
Similarly to the first set, set three was tied at 14-14 after 28
serves, after which CSU went on a 3-0 rally. Holeman and Crissy
Skokan earned kills during the run. Melissa Richie ended the rally
with a kill, which was followed by four rally points for a 19-17
score.
Gardner-Webb tied the set at 19-19 before kills by Nokes and
Hill made it 21-19. CSU held set point at 24-22 after a Rhyne
service error. The Runnin' Bulldogs fought off three set points in
total, and earned a 28-26 victory with two Laura Wilcox kills.
The visitors continued their momentum into the third set,
leading 15-13 midway through the frame. Klinger posted three
straight kills for a 16-15 CSU lead, part of a 6-1 run which
yielded a 19-16 advantage. G-W scored its last point of the match
to pull to within two points before the Lady Bucs surged to the
finish at 25-17 with six straight points for the match win.
CSU Head Coach Danyel Bellush said, "We're happy with the win.
We need to keep trying to get better every day for the tournament.
I'm happy for Amanda to get her record, and for how Kayla stepped
up, but we still have work to do."
The Lady Bucs will conclude the 2010 regular season schedule
Saturday, Nov. 13, playing host to Presbyterian College at 6 p.m.
CSU will honor its five seniors, along with the Buccaneer parents
in attendance, with a ceremony before the match. The Runnin'
Bulldogs will compete at Winthrop Saturday at 1 p.m. in a final
tune-up before the conference tournament.
