CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern volleyball team
downed rival Coastal Carolina in straight sets (25-22, 25-17,
25-11) Tuesday, Nov. 2 at CSU Field House, earning CSU's first
sweep of Coastal since 1993. Tuesday served as the Lady Bucs
(11-17, 5-8 Big South) second win in the last three meetings with
the Chanticleers (14-14, 7-6) following a 21-match CCU winning
streak in the series.
CSU turned the tables on the Chanticleers, as Coastal had
previously swept the Lady Bucs in the conference opener Sept. 21 at
Kimbel Arena. On Tuesday, CSU owned the net, hitting .305 as a team
while holding Coastal to a .057 attack percentage. The Lady Bucs
posted 10 blocks and seven service aces on the evening, with
six players serving up at least one ace. CSU out-hit CCU, 37-28, in
the kills department, and earned 42 digs to the Chanticleers
25.
Senior Cori Holeman led the way for the Bucs with a tremendous
performance, registering three solo blocks and four block assists
in addition to a match-high-tying 11 kills. Holeman hit .526 for
the match, and her three solo blocks tied a career high.
Amanda Hill contributed eight kills, 10 digs and three block
assists, earning double-digits in digs for the fifth straight
match. Amberle Trinder (.333 hitting percentage) and Amy Nokes
(.667) registered seven kills apiece. Nokes added 28 assists and
two service aces, and Trinder posted three block assists. Tricia
Rodl collected 14 digs on the evening.
For Coastal, Chelsy Kimes tied for the match lead with 11 kills,
adding seven digs. Lauren Alejo registered 12 assists to pace
Coastal.
The two teams battled through a tightly-contested first set
which featured 13 ties and seven lead changes. Coastal held the
early momentum, leading 13-10 after 23 serves. CSU rebounded with a
3-0 rally to tie it at 13-13.
Following two kills by Coastal's Erika Lightsey, Holeman sent
down three kills in a row for a 16-15 advantage. The visitors
responded to take the lead at 17-16 and again at 20-19, but CSU
staged a 5-0 surge for set point at 24-20, with Hill and Nokes
kills bookending two Coastal errors. Trinder clinched set one,
25-22, with a kill. Holeman hit 6-for-10 during the opening set,
while Kimes posted five kills.
The Chanticleers built an early 6-3 lead in the middle frame,
thanks in part to a service ace, block, and kill by Kimes. CSU then
scored the next four points, with Holeman earning two kills and a
solo block and Kayla Klinger posting a kill for a 7-6 lead. Coastal
tied the set at 7-all, but could not regain the lead, slicing the
deficit to one at 12-11 before the Lady Bucs put the contest out of
reach with a 13-6 closing run. A block by Holeman and Erin LaVenice
gave CSU set point at 24-15, and the home team converted its third
chance, winning 25-17 to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room.
The Lady Bucs continued to play with intensity following
intermission, storming out to a 13-5 lead on the way to a 25-11
victory. It marked their largest margin of victory over a
conference opponent since a 25-11 set three victory over
Gardner-Webb during a 3-1 win Oct. 30, 2009. CSU hit .478 as a
team, posting four team blocks during the set while Coastal
connected at a negative pace.
Head Coach Danyel Bellush said, "All pistons were firing
tonight. We had some key players step up, which was awesome. It was
a great crowd, again. We had great energy, and just came to
compete. We've been working on that a lot, just getting better for
the tournament. We're staying faithful, and just trying to really
work on our mental game, having little tests here and there, and
that was a big test tonight against the defending conference
champions. We're excited with the victory."
CSU will compete in its final regular-season away match
Saturday, Nov. 6 at 2 p.m., facing Asheville at the Justice Center.
This season's first meeting with the Bulldogs required a full five
sets, with UNCA prevailing, 3-2, Oct. 8. Coastal Carolina next
plays host to Liberty for its senior day Saturday.
