STATESBORO, Ga. - The Charleston Southern volleyball team posted
a 1-1 record on the final day of the SpringHill Suites
Invitational. The Lady Bucs defeated South Alabama in five sets
(21-25, 25-12, 19-25, 25-21, 15-11) before being swept by host
institution Georgia Southern.
As a result of the Lady Bucs 1-2 weekend, CSU now holds a 5-8
record. Ga. Southern improves to 8-6 after a 4-0 tournament
showing. South Alabama drops to 5-10 on the season.
CSU's Amanda Hill was named to the All-Tournament Team, her
third honor in as many tournaments in 2010.
The Charleston Southern volleyball team posted a 3-2 victory over
South Alabama Saturday, Sept .18 at Georgia Southern's Hanner
Fieldhouse. The Lady Bucs won the final two sets for the
come-from-behind win.
The Lady Bucs posted a season-high 86 digs, to South Alabama's
83. CSU recorded 57 kills at a .185 rate, while the Jaguars checked
in with 51, hitting .102.
CSU's Amanda Hill led with 24 kills and added 13 digs for her
9th double-double of the season. Cori Holeman added 13 kills, while
Tricia Rodl led with 27 digs. Amberle Trinder paced the Lady Bucs
with a season-high seven blocks, while Hill contributed five block
assists.
South Alabama won sets one and three for a 2-1 lead in the
match. The Lady Bucs began the comeback in set four. Leading 8-7,
CSU went on an 11-3 rally which featured three kills each from
Holeman and Emily Libertowski, to claim a commanding 19-10
advantage. USA quickly rebounded with a 10-2 run to draw to within
one point at 21-20, earning three blocks during the rally. CSU won
set four, 25-21, scoring four of the final five points of the
contest to tie the match at 2-2. The teams combined for 59 total
digs, including 31 from the Lady Bucs, in set four.
Set five closed out a tightly-contested match in style, with seven
ties and four lead changes. The Lady Bucs claimed an 8-6 lead at
the changeover after kills from Holeman and Libertowski. The
Jaguars bounced back to even the score at 9-9. CSU quickly
countered with a 5-1 rally, featuring two kills from Hill and a
Trinder-Hill block, for a 14-10 edge. Trinder spiked the set- and
match-winning kill, capping the 15-11 set five victory and 3-2
match win.
Amy Nokes posted 31 assists, while Laura Grace Swindler dished
out a season-best 13 assists in addition to eight digs.
Samia Salmao registered a team-leading 13 kills and also
contributed 15 digs for USA. Jennica Hagberg added 45 assists to
lead all players. Jillian Jordan and Olivia Mohler posted 12 kills
apiece.
South Alabama earned early separation in the match with a 13-8
lead to open the first set. USA maintained a five-point lead at
20-15 when CSU staged a four-point rally on kills by Nokes, Holeman
and Kayla Klinger. A service ace by Klinger tied set one, 21-21,
but USA earned the ensuing four points for the win.
CSU never trailed in set two, tying the match at 1-1 with a 25-12
victory. The Lady Bucs hit .393 during the second set, receiving
five kills from Hill and three each from Holeman and Trinder during
the frame.
The Jaguars took a 2-1 lead with a 25-19 victory in set three, but
were unable to hold off the Lady Bucs in sets four and five.
Charleston Southern Head Coach Danyel Bellush said, "We are still
working to find our rhythm, but we found a way to win."

Eagles Sweep Lady Bucs in Final Match of SpringHill Suites
Invitational
Georgia Southern (8-6) completed a four-win weekend with a
3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-17) victory over Charleston Southern (5-8) in
the final match of the 2010 SpringHill Suites Invitational.
The Eagles used an effective attack, earning kills at a .431
pace, while CSU connected at a .107 success rate on the attack.
Georgia Southern posted 58 digs on the match to the Lady Bucs'
38.
Amanda Hill led the Lady Bucs with 11 kills, also adding eight
digs. Tricia Rodl recorded 11 digs, while freshman Maggie Murphy
contributed a season-high 10 digs. Hill and Amberle Trinder posted
three block assists apiece to pace CSU. Amy Nokes led CSU with 10
assists, followed by Laura Grace Swindler with eight.
GSU's Parker Small and Bethany Sanford found success on
Saturday, as each registered 15 kills. Small hit .667, while
Sanford posted a .448 attack percentage. Kate Van Dyke led all
players with 41 assists, and Enjoli Johnson posted five blocks.
The Lady Bucs built early momentum in set one, and led 6-4 after
a 3-0 rally fueled by three kills from Emily Libertowski. A 4-0 run
gave the Eagles the lead at 8-6, but CSU trimmed the margin to 8-7
on a Cori Holeman kill. The Lady Bucs inched to within two points
at 11-9 when Trinder sent down a kill. GSU then staged an 8-0 run
to pull away, 19-9. CSU would not narrow the deficit to within less
than nine points for the remainder of the Eagles 25-15 victory in
set one.
Georgia Southern led from the first point of set two, building a
9-1 lead after 10 serves. The Eagles hit .567 with 17 kills as a
team during the second set, and held CSU to seven kills and a .059
attack percentage in the middle stanza. GSU took a 2-0 lead in the
match, winning set two, 25-12.
The teams played evenly during the early portion of set three,
with GSU holding a slim 7-5 lead after a Holeman kill. However, the
Eagles built on to their advantage with a 4-0 rally, and led 19-11
after a Moriah Bellissimo kill. Hill then posted two kills, and
teamed with Trinder for two blocks, as CSU sliced the deficit to
four at 19-15. GSU made a final surge for the 25-17 victory,
winning the match, 3-0.
CSU will next be in action Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 6 p.m., as the
Lady Bucs open conference play against rival Coastal Carolina in
Conway, S.C.. The Chanticleers bring a 6-7 record into Tuesday's
match, having gone 1-2 at the Kennesaw State Invitational.
