Lady Bucs' Tenacity Is The Straw To Break The Camel's Backs

CHARLESTON S.C. : CSU notched their first Big South Conference win of the year; defeating the Fighting Camels of Campbell (22-25, 26-24, 25-20, 25-17) in Charleston, S.C. Oct. 1.

CSU (4-15) posted their best offensive game of the year as four players recorded double-digit kills. Wynter Davis led the way with 15, Erin LaVenice had 12, Amy Nokes tallied 11 and Kayla Klinger sent in 10. Wynter Davis and Erin LaVenice both hit for an impressive .458. Amy Nokes had her best game of the year; to go along with her 11 kills Nokes had 32 assists and 13 digs. Ashley Higginbothem and Sydney Tracy also recorded 13 digs. Kirsten Struksnes had 23 assists, and Kayla Klinger had six service aces.


CAMPBELL (9-10) was led by Jordan Reaves and Annie Kobeski who had 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Heather Wilson had 36 assists and Kelsey Campbell notched 22 digs.

The first set saw explosive action by both teams; Amy Nokes sent in a kill to give CSU the 8-7 lead. Kills by Nokes and Kayla Klinger would stretch the lead to 15-11 Bucs. CU would come back to tie it up at 20-20 before eventually taking the late lead and ultimately the set 25-22. CSU had 14 kills on 40 total attacks compared to CU's 12 kills on 35 total attacks.

The second set saw a carry over in the intensity as CSU would take the early 7-3 lead. Errors would let CU back into the match, the Fighting Camels would take a two point lead 18-16. CSU would continue to battle taking the 20-19 lead thanks to a Sydney Tracy kill. The teams would exchange points down the stretch before Kayla Klinger knocked in a service ace to give the Lady Bucs the 26-24 set victory. CSU had 15 kills on 43 total attacks (.186) compared to Campbell's 12 on 41 (.146).

Campbell jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in the third set. CSU would fight back to tie the match 11-11. Wynter Davis was unstoppable down the stretch recording four key kills before Erin Lavenice ended the set with a kill of her own. CSU took the set 25-20. The Lady Bucs had 15 kills on 38 total attacks (.237) and the Fighting Camels had 11 kills on 36 total attacks (.194). Wynter Davis had six kills and hit for.714, Amy Nokes dished out 10 assists.

The fourth set was a war throughout. Both teams would exchange points early until Amy Nokes would get a kill to put CSU up 9-7. CSU would extend the lead to five thanks to another Nokes kill. CSU would begin to pull away and eventually took the set and the match 25-17. The Lady Bucs had 18 kills on 35 total attacks (.371) in comparison to CU's 8 for 26 (.192). Kirsten Struksnes had 10 assists and Erin LaVenice recorded five kills.

Next, CSU will head to Conway, S.C. to take on Coastal Carolina at 7 p.m. on Oct. 7.
