CHARLESTON: S.C.: Charleston Southern made it
two home wins in a row, defeating Milligan College, 89-59 on Nov.
19 in Charleston.
Kelvin Martin led all scorers with 23 points (9-12). Martin also
had seven rebounds and three assists. Cedrick Bowen added 19 points
to go with four rebounds. Kyle Grisby led the way for the Buffaloes
totaling 21 points and five assists. CSU outshot Milligan 51.7% to
46.9%, outrebounded the Buffaloes 42-26, and dished out 16 in
comparison to Milligan's six.
The Buffaloes got on the board first by hitting a three, CSU would
quickly answer with a trey of their own to tie the game 3-3 at the
18:29 mark. Kelvin Martin electrified the crowd with a dunk over
Marshall Hardy to bring the Bucs within one, 6-7. Martin would
continue to attack the basket drawing consecutive Milligan foals;
he would hit a free throw at the 15:28 mark to tie the game at
nine. Milligan would hit a three pointer to take the 12-9 lead
before a Mathiang Muo three and an and-one by Jeremy Sexton would
put the Bucs up three, 15-12, with 14:32 left in the first half.
Martin would sky for a dunk off of a rebound at the 13:51 mark to
five the Bucs a five point advantage 17-12. The Buffaloes would
have a tough time scoring, until a lay up by Hardy would bring
Milligan within six 22-16. Chris Grier would quickly answer with a
lay up of his own at the 11:21 mark to extend the Buc lead to
24-16. Martin would drive and dish to an open Saah Nimley who would
bury a corner three to give the Bucs an eleven point lead with 9:54
left. Muo would continue his hot shooting from beyond the arc
hitting a jumper to put the Bucs up 13, 30-17, with 8:30 remaining.
Martin would once again woo the fans with a tomahawk dunk at the
8:51 mark to put the Bucs up 32-17. The Buccaneers would clamp down
on defensive, keeping the Buffaloes scoreless for nearly seven
minutes. Cedrick Bowen's two free throws at the 3:07 mark would
extend the Buc advantage to 36-19. Nimley would intercept a Buffalo
pass and take it the length of the floor to give CSU the 39-21
lead. Milligan rattled off four unanswered to close the gap with
11, 39-28, with just seconds left in the first half. A strong lay
up by Muo would close out the first half with Buccaneers up 43-30.
CSU shot 48% from the field in the first half, while keeping
Milligan to just 10 field goals. The Bucs shot an eye-popping 71%
(5-7) from beyond the arc, allowing Milligan only 20%. Charleston
Southern capitalized on Milligan mistakes to score 13 points on 13
Buffalo turnovers. CSU was led by Martin's 10 points, three
rebounds and one block. Muo led all scorers with 11 and Bowen was
tops in rebounding with four. Cordero Seymour's 10 points and four
rebounds were the most for the Buffaloes.
Muo started off the second half with a huge block which sent the
Buccaneers off and running. Jeremy Sexton would drive the lane and
drop in a floater to put the Bucs up 15 in the early parts of the
second half. Sexton would then share the love with a no-look pass
to Martin who would slam it home to put CSU up 47-30 with 18:21
remaining. CSU would continue the defensive pressure that they
displayed in the first, half keeping Milligan off of the board for
nearly four minutes. A bucket by Kyle Grisby would break the
Milligan cold streak and make it 49-32 Buccaneers. A technical foul
on Cordero would send Milligan's leading scorer to the bench at the
14:41 mark. Strickland would race the length of the court, dropping
in a lay up to give CSU the 56-35 advantage. Three consecutive by
Grisby would bring the Buffaloes within 10, 56-46. A dish from
Nimley to Muo would put the Bucs up 14, 63-49, with just over 10
minutes remaining. Nimley would pick Bryant Edwards pocket and dish
to a cutting Martin who would slam it down to give the Bucs a 20
point cushion with 6:45 left in half two. Back to back Mitchell
Deter threes would put CSU up 30, 89-59 to close out the half and
the game.
CSU(2-2) will return to the Buc Dome on Monday to take on
Stetson University at 7:30 p.m.
