CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern baseball team
surrendered an eight-run lead, giving up 13 unanswered runs as they
fell to the Eagles of Georgia Southern by a score of 14-9 in their
home finale on Tuesday afternoon at CSU Ballpark in Charleston,
S.C.
The game marked the conclusion of the Bucs' (27-26, 14-10 BSC)
nonconference schedule. They finish the season with a 13-16 record
in nonconference action and were 16-13 at CSU Ballpark in
2011.
Matt Still was 3-for-4 on the day for the Bucs, with a run and
an RBI. Brantley Meier had two hits on the day with three runs
scored. Brandon McKinney had a two-RBI single, while Walt
Quattlebaum had two hits, a run and an RBI.
Tyler Vick got the start for the Bucs, giving up one hit but
holding the Eagles scoreless in 3.0 innings. George Schaefer saw
two innings of action for the Bucs, giving up four runs off of one
hit. The third of eight CSU pitchers to take the mound, Corey
Deighan (1-2) took the loss, giving up three runs and one hit.
Victor Roache and Ben Morgan each had two hits for the Eagles,
with Roache homering both times. He had a team-leading seven RBI,
while Morgan had another three for the Eagles. Georgia Southern
totaled eight hits on the day.
Justin Hess got the start for the Eagles, giving up six hits and
six runs, five of which were earned. He struck out seven in 4.0
innings before giving way to Josh Adams (7-6). Adams gave up three
runs off four hits, striking out three to pick up the win.
Meier scored the first two runs of the game, crossing home plate
to give the Bucs a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Both Meier and Tom Burkett made it home on a double by Walt
Quattlebaum in the bottom of the second, giving CSU the 3-0 lead
after two innings.
The Eagles got on the board in the top of the sixth, with
Stryker Brown scoring on a ground out by Eric Phillips.
Charleston Southern added six more runs in the bottom of the
fifth inning. Jaren Sustar singled to drive home Meier and Burkett
before a single by Nick Chinners drove home Sustar to put the Bucs
ahead 6-1. Still hit his team-leading 18th double of the season to
score Quattlebaum. A single by McKinney added two more runs to the
tally, as both Still and Chinners made it home to keep the Bucs in
front 9-1 after five innings.
However, a nine-run rally in the top of the seventh inning put
the Eagles in front for the first time. Roache hit a grand-slam to
make it a four-run deficit at 9-5. Brown walked with the bases
loaded to add another run, putting the score at 9-6 in favor of
CSU. A three-RBI double by Morgan tied things up at 9-9. Morgan
then scored the go-ahead run when Philips walked with the bases
loaded to give GSU its first lead of the day at 10-9.
Steve Cochrane scored on a sacrifice bunt, adding the Eagles'
lead in the top of the eighth. A three-run homer in the top of the
ninth by Roache, his second of the day, finished things off to give
Georgia Southern the 14-9 win.
Charleston Southern will finish the regular season with a
three-game Big South series at Coastal Carolina, starting with a 6
p.m. match up on Thursday in Conway, S.C. The series will
determine the finals standings for the 2011 Big South Tournament.
The Bucs currently sit in third place with a BSC record of
14-10.
