CHARLESTON, S.C. - Paced by 10 kills apiece by Rachel Fertitta
and Jesse Miedema, the visiting Radford Highlanders swept the host
Charleston Southern Buccaneers on Saturday evening inside the
Buccaneer Field House, 25-23, 25-23, 25-19.
Late runs in sets two and three propelled the Highlanders
(13-11, 3-4 BSC) past the Lady Bucs (9-15, 3-4 BSC) as Radford hit
.205 from the floor as a team in the match in recording the
sweep.
Sydney Tracy led all players with 12 kills on the night as the
CSU sophomore outside hitter hit .306 from the floor for the Lady
Bucs, while Kirsten Struksnes set up the Charleston Southern attack
with 27 set assists. Kayla Klinger added seven kills and 10 digs,
while Ashley Higginbothem led CSU with 13 digs in the match.
Fertitta hit .667 from the floor in leading Radford to the win,
while Jena Braden and Christine Beckham combined for 34 set assists
for the Highlanders. Three players were in double-digits in digs
for Radford with Yacine Meyer finishing with 16, while Emily Carlin
(15) and Katelyn Meeks (12) were also in double figures.
Radford took the early lead in the first set going ahead 6-3
following a Braden service ace. The lead grew to four on a CSU
attack error at 8-4 as the Highlanders led the majority of the
first frame. CSU battled all the way back, tying the set up at 23
apiece following kills by Tracy and Klinger, but back-to-back kills
by Carlin and Miedema gave the first set to the visitors,
25-23.
Charleston Southern built several leads in the contested second
set, but the Lady Bucs were unable to hold on as the Highlanders
rallied with a 10-3 run at the end of the frame to build the 2-0
lead.
CSU built the largest lead of the match by either team at the
time going up six points at 15-9 following a block by Katrina
Houston and Meredith Parrott, but the Highlanders responded with a
four point swing on the back of Beckham's serve to cut the lead
down to two. The Lady Bucs continued to press the lead going up
20-15 following a set error by Radford.
However, the Highlanders rallied back, tying the set at 23
following a Lambert kill and she teamed up with Cheyanne James to
close out the frame with back-to-back blocks to give Radford the
2-0 lead heading into the break.
Radford opened up the third frame scoring the first three points
and eight of the first 10 in building an 8-2 lead following a
Carlin kill. Charleston Southern rallied back to tie the match up
at 10-all following an RU attack error, but the Highlanders
continued to press the attack, retaking the lead with a 5-1 run at
15-11.
CSU kept fighting in the set, cutting the lead down to one point
at 18-17 following a combined block by Davis and Tracy, but the
Highlanders pulled away late as Miedema recorded the final kill as
Radford held off the host Buccaneers 25-19 in the final frame to
record the three set victory.
From the floor, Radford outhit the Lady Bucs .205/.131 and the
Highlanders led the way defensively with 56 digs to CSU's 54, while
the teams matched each other with six blocks apiece.
Charleston Southern returns to the road next week as the Lady
Bucs make the trip to Asheville, N.C. to take on Big South opponent
UNC Asheville on Friday, October 19th. First serve between the Lady
Bucs and the Bulldogs is set for 7 p.m. Radford returns home,
taking on Winthrop University in Big South play also on the 19th,
with first serve taking place at 7 p.m.
