ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Kayla Klinger led the way for Charleston
Southern with 14 digs as the Lady Bucs fell to host UNC Asheville
in the Justice Center on Friday evening in four sets, 25-20, 25-14,
13-25, 25-19.
CSU (9-16, 3-5 BSC) hit .182 on the evening led by Klinger's 14
kills and the junior outside hitter completed the double-double
with 12 digs to pace the Lady Bucs on the evening, while Holly
Shelton, Anna Moore and Christine Lakatos recorded 12 kills apiece
for the Bulldogs (7-16, 3-4 BSC) in the victory.
Moore led the home team with six kills in the opening frame as
the Bulldogs jumped out to a 13-7 lead in the set. Charleston
Southern battled back behind back-to-back aces by Kirsten Struksnes
and a pair of kills by Klinger as CSU rallied to cut the lead down
to three at 21-18. However, Asheville closed out the set win on
kills by Shelton and Chelsie Kenley to take the early 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs jumped out early in the second set building an 18-9
lead and Asheville went up double-digits at 24-12 before closing
out the set on a CSU service error to head into the break with the
2-0 lead. Erin LaVenice lead the Lady Bucs with three kills and a
solo block in the frame to pace the CSU offensive efforts.
Charleston Southern jumped out of the gates in the third set,
using a 16-5 run sparked by a kill by LaVenice and capped by four
kills by Klinger as the Lady Bucs built a 17-8 lead in the frame
following a service ace by Siraya Windsor. CSU added six blocks in
the set as Windsor put the Lady Bucs at set point with a kill
before teaming up with LaVenice for the final block to take the
third set 25-13.
In the fourth set, Lakatos was the catalyst for the Bulldogs as
she had six kills as Asheville built a 16-8 lead. CSU battled back
in the match behind Klinger and LaVenice while a kill by Meredith
Parrott put the match within two at 20-18. Moore and Shelton pushed
the margin to 24-18 and Shelton provided the final kill to close
out the match in favor of the home team.
Parrott added eight kills, hitting .471 from the floor in the
match, while Struknes led the team with 33 set assist and nine
digs. Ashley Higgenbothem led the team's defensive efforts with 14
digs, while LaVenice and Wynter Davis combined for 10 blocks at the
net in the loss.
Charleston Southern continues Big South Conference play on the
road as the Lady Bucs travel to Boiling Springs, N.C. to take on
Gardner-Webb on Saturday, October 20th. First serve between CSU and
the Runnin' Bulldogs is set for 2 p.m.
