CHARLESTON, S.C. - Wynter Davis had 11 kills and the Lady Bucs
hit .408 from the floor as Charleston Southern swept Savannah State
at the Buccaneer Field House on Tuesday evening, 25-3, 25-12,
25-14.
Charleston Southern (12-18) hit a season-high .611 in the first
set for the largest scoring margin on the season as CSU defeated
the Tigers (0-29) for the third time this season. Charleston
Southern had previously swept Savannah State on the road on
September 4th and at a neutral site on October 9th in recording the
season sweep against the Tigers.
"Any time you play a team three times, the odds catch up that
you'll eventually beat you," commented head coach Al Givens
following the match. "I thought we were really focused in the first
set with our discipline and execution and we played as well as we
have all year."
The Lady Bucs opened up the scoring with the first five points
of the opening set before a service error put Savannah State on the
board. Following a kill by Savannah State's Chikia Jones that
narrowed the gap to 7-2, the Lady Bucs followed with a 16-0 run on
Sydney Tracy and Laura Grace Swindler's serve as Davis recorded six
of CSU's 12 kills in the opening frame to go up 23-2. An attack
error gave the Lady Tigers their final point of the set before an
Ashley Johnston kill and SSU attack error closed out the set.
Siraya Windsor recorded a pair of service aces to open the
second frame as the Lady Bucs went up 8-3 following a Davis kill.
SSU rallied back with three consecutive points as Christian Lyle
and Asiha Williams combined on a block to put the score at 8-6, but
CSU responded with an 11-3 run as Cassidy Greer and Catie Hurt
placed in kills during the stretch to give the Lady Bucs the 19-9
advantage.
Charleston Southern closed out the frame with a 6-3 run as Erin
LaVenice, Davis and Hurt all placed in kills, while Johnston had a
service ace to give CSU the 2-0 lead with the 25-12 lead.
Savannah State built their largest lead of the night in the
third set as Lyle and Nabori Perez provided kills to give the
Tigers an 8-6 lead. Parrott followed with a kill for the Lady Bucs
to spark a 10 point swing on Kirsten Struksnes' serve as Tracy had
a pair of kills in the stretch to put CSU up 16-8. The lead reached
double-digits at 22-11 following an Ashley Higginbothem ace and
Davis kill as Charleston Southern completed the sweep with the
25-14 victory.
Davis led the way with her fourth double-digit kill effort on
the season, while Siraya Windsor added seven kills and four service
aces in the victory. Struksnes set up the CSU offensive attack with
23 set assists, while Greer added 10 of her own in the victory.
Defensively, Windsor also led the backline with seven digs, while
LaVenice and Johnston had two blocks apiece.
Bianca Brochu led the visiting Tigers with four kills, while
Williams had eight set assists in the loss. Bryana Gadis led SSU's
defensive efforts with five digs on the backline.
"Now we're heading back into conference play and we'll have to
focus on that," said Givens about the upcoming back against Coastal
Carolina. "We match up well with them and it's going to be a war
after our win against them the first time we played them. We're
going to have to play at the same level or higher as everybody
plays a lot tougher at their home court and they want the
opportunity for redemption."
Charleston Southern continues the 2012 season as the Lady Bucs
travel to Conway, S.C. to take on Coastal Carolina for their final
road contest of the season on Friday, November 2nd. First serve
between the Lady Bucs and the Chanticleers is set for 7 p.m.
