CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina overcame another double-digit
kill performance by Charleston Southern's Meredith Parrott as the
Chanticleers recorded a three-set sweep over the visiting Lady Bucs
to split the season series following their 25-17, 25-20, 25-18
victory.
Meredith Parrott had 10 kills for Charleston Southern (12-19,
4-8), her second double-digit kill performance against the Chants
on the season after recording 14 kills and eight blocks in their
previous matchup, as the Lady Bucs hit .126 from the floor in the
match in the loss. Meghan Laffin led all players with 16 kills as
Coastal hit .339 as a team in the three set victory.
Monica Hall and Gabrielle Horvath opened the match with
back-to-back kills as Coastal struck first in the opening set,
while an ace by CSU's Kirsten Struksnes kept the match close as the
Chants went up 9-8 in the frame. A kill by Lauren Alejo sparked a
10-5 run in favor of the home team and Laffin added two kills
during the stretch as Coastal went up 21-14 following a block by
Hall and Kindra Bailey.
Charleston Southern battled back behind a pair of Parrott kills
as the Lady Bucs cut the lead down to 22-17 but Eszter Nagy and
Horvath closed out the final three points of the set with points to
put Coastal up 1-0.
Coastal Carolina came out swinging in the second set with an 8-2
run to open the frame with Nagy providing two of her 10 kills on
the night in the early going. Down 13-6, the Lady Bucs rallied with
a 6-1 run sparked by Struksnes' serve as Parrott combined on a pair
of blocks with Erin LaVenice and Siraya Windsor, while LaVenice
added a kill during the stretch as CSU pulled within one at
14-13.
Kills by Bailey and Horvath stretched the Coastal lead out to
four at 18-14 as the Chants gradually stretched their advantage
back to five points at 23-18 following a CSU attack error. Parrott
and Windsor kept the set alive with kills, but Bailey closed out
the frame and gave Coastal the 2-0 advantage heading into the
break.
Coming out of the break the teams battled through the most
contested set of the night as CSU and Coastal had eight ties and
three lead changes in the third frame.
With the score tied at 9-all following a block by LaVenice and
Windsor, Coastal went on a 7-2 run capped by a pair of kills by
Laffin to build a 16-11 lead. CSU attempted to mount a comeback
behind kills by Wynter Davis, LaVenice, Windsor and Sydney Tracy,
but Coastal's lead held constant as the Chanticleers closed out the
sweep with Nagy's final kill to finish the match.
Struksnes recorded a double-double on the evening for the Lady
Bucs, setting up the attack with 18 set assists and added a
team-high 12 digs in the loss. Ashley Higginbothem contributed nine
digs of her own on the defensive side for CSU, while LaVenice and
Parrott had three blocks apiece.
Bailey added 11 kills for Coastal Carolina, joining Nagy and
Laffin in double-digits in kills, while Alejo recorded a match-high
44 set assists in the win. Jenna Orner and Jamie DiMaggio were in
double-digits in digs with 14 and 11 apiece, while Bailey led the
Chants defensive efforts at the net with three blocks.
Charleston Southern closes out the 2012 regular season next
weekend as the Lady Bucs welcome High Point and Campbell to the
Buccaneer Field House on November 9th and 10th. First serve for CSU
against High Point on Friday evening is set for 7 p.m., while
Charleston Southern will take on the Fighting Camels of Campbell on
Saturday for Senior Day at 7 p.m.
