Jacksonville, Fla. - What started as a promising day ended in
disappointment for the Charleston Southern baseball team as the
Buccaneers dropped to 5-5 on the season with a 7-4 loss to
Jacksonville State on Saturday afternoon.
Charleston Southern will face North Florida on Sunday afternoon
to complete its three-game road trip to Florida. The Buccaneers
follow Sunday's game with six consecutive home games.
Jaren Sustar led CSU's 10-hit attack with three hits. Chase
Shelton and Drew Woodall added a pair of hits each. The offensive
output marked the third consecutive double-digit hit game for the
Buccaneers.
CSU opened the game in fine fashion, posting three runs in the
top of the first inning. With one out, Sustar doubled to right
field and scored on John Faircloth's double to right center.
Alex Tomasovich singled to left, moving Faircloth to third, and
Shelton delivered Faircloth with a single to left. With two outs,
Woodall singled to right, scoring Tomasovich.
Jacksonville State got on the board on the bottom of the second
as Stephen Bartlett belted a two-run homer off CSU starter Ryan
Gunther.
The Gamecocks used the long ball again in the fifth when Cody
Blanchard hit a three-run blast off Gunther, giving JSU the 5-3
lead.
Jacksonville State added two more runs in the eighth and CSU
threatened in the ninth, loading the bases with one out. CSU would
score a run on a wild pitch but would fail to score another.
Gunther would take the loss, falling to 1-1 on the young season.
The senior right-hander allowed five earned runs on eight hits in
5.1 innings of work. He walked three and fanned five.
