SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Charleston Southern's Saah Nimley hit a three-pointer to give the Bucs a two-point lead with 3:40 remaining, but Wofford responded with 12 of the game's final 16 points to score a 64-58 win at Benjamin Johnson Arena on Wednesday night.
Trailing 52-43 following a Jaylen Allen jumper with 6:38 left, Nimley spurred an 11-0 run and pushed CSU ahead on a deep three from the right side. Wofford's Karl Cochran made a layup on the ensuing possession, and Justin Gordon connected on a jumper the next time down to give the Terriers the lead for good. Eric Garcia banked in a three late in the shot clock to give Wofford a 61-55 edge at the 1:17 mark and effectively put the game away.
CSU (5-4) led by as many as ten points in the first half, but saw Wofford (9-2) answer with a 20-9 run to take a 27-26 lead into halftime. Nimley paced the Bucs with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Arlon Harper and Will Saunders tallied 13 and 12 markers, respectively.
CSU limited Wofford to 43 percent shooting and held Preseason Southern Conference Player of the Year Karl Cochran to a 4-of-15 effort from the field. Garcia picked up the slack for the Terriers with 15 points, and Spencer Collins and Allen chipped in 11 and 10. Wofford shot 50 percent in the second half, and was able to hold CSU to 36 percent shooting overall. The Bucs struggled for much of the night from three-point range before Nimley hit two and Saunders drilled one in the late 11-0 charge.
"We competed hard and gave a good effort but didn't execute well enough to beat a team of Wofford's caliber," CSU head coach Barclay Radebaugh said afterward. "This game came down to eight or ten plays and we did not execute to the level needed to come out on top. We'll go back to work and continue to attack our weaknesses with a really good, undefeated, Colorado State team up next."
Aaron Wheeler started CSU's late surge with a layup to the cut the deficit to 52-45 with 6:09 left. Saunders buried a triple, and Nimley added another in front of the Bucs' bench in a span of 48 seconds to bring the score to 52-51. Nimley took the reins again following two defensive stops and front-end misses for both sides on 1-on-1 opportunities, draining a trey to put CSU in front. The Bucs could only muster a Harper free throw in the closing seconds, and two free throws, over the final 3:40, however, as Wofford held on for the victory.
The Bucs came out sharp against a Wofford team fresh off a win over N.C. State. CSU put together a 14-0 run at one point, holding Wofford scoreless for 6:07 of game time to take a 17-7 lead. Six different players scored during that stretch, as a Cedrick Bowen two-handed stuff off a pretty find from Wheeler and a Saunders three provided the highlights.
Wofford, which entered the game 35th nationally in scoring defense, put the clamps down on the Bucs for the remainder of the stanza as CSU managed only four field goals over the final 11 minutes of the period. The Terriers chipped away at their ten-point deficit with balanced scoring, but still trailed 26-20 following a Harper triple from in front of the Wofford bench with 4:09 left until halftime. Allen scored five straight points, though, and Lee Skinner hit a pair of free throws to send the Terriers into halftime in the lead.
Skinner had three layups early in the second half, and Cochran finally hit a couple of jump shots, as Wofford twice took an 11-point lead before CSU rallied down the stretch.
CSU concludes a rigorous three-game road swing on Monday at Colorado State. The Rams are currently 10-0 and on the outskirts of both Top-25 polls. Tipoff in Fort Collins, Col. is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
