Box Score CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Charleston Southern battled throughout the entire game in John Paul Jones Arena on Friday night against host Virginia, but CSU was unable to overcome a halftime deficit in falling to the Cavaliers, 85-65.
Alyssa Mann scored 20 points for the fourth game this season, while Nayla Long added 10 points for the Bucs as CSU (5-5) shot 50.0% from the floor as a team against the Cavaliers. Monique Maximilien was also in double-digits in the scoring category with 12 points and a team-high five rebounds on 6-of-7 shooting.
Mikayla Venson led Virginia (8-3) with 24 points, while Faith Randolph (17), Aliyah Huland El (12), J'Kyra Brown (10) and Lauren Moses (10) were also in double-digits.
The Cavaliers jumped out to a 10-2 lead with 6:36 remaining in the first quarter and went up 17-6 following Venson's second three-pointer of the period before the Bucs rallied back. CSU closed out the frame with a 12-8 run with Long connecting on back-to-back baskets before Shauntavia Dobson drilled the three-pointer before the buzzer to leave the Bucs trailing 25-18 after one.
Breanna Saunders kept the game within single digits at the 7:22 mark with a layup to put the score at 29-20, while Mann connected on a late free throw to pull the Bucs back within 10 at 38-28 with 1:55 remaining. The Cavaliers ended the half on a 6-0 run to take the 44-28 advantage into the break, capped by Randolph's three-pointer.
Mann took over for the Bucs in the third quarter as the senior guard connected on three of her first four shots, including a three-pointer at the 6:19 mark, on her way to scoring a team-high 12 points during the frame. Mann added her second three-pointer of the quarter at the 2:01 mark and Elyse Kiploks connected on a jumper in the final minute to send the teams into the fourth with the Bucs trailing 72-50.
The Bucs outscored the Cavaliers in the fourth quarter, 15-13, with Georgia Elliott-King connecting on her second three-pointer of the season in the final minute to end the scoring in the contest.
Charleston Southern returns home on Tuesday afternoon for their final game before breaking for the holidays as the Buccaneers host Western Carolina. Tipoff between the Bucs and Catamounts in the Buc Dome is set for noon.
