Get to Know Kahea Carvalho

The setter position just got better for the VolleyBucs, and they went across the country to improve the depth of the position. Kahea Carvalho hails from the state of California, where she shined on the volleyball court.

The daughter of Josh and Kathy Carvalho was a star at Palos Verdes High School in Rolling Hills, CA, where she led the Sea Kings to a gold medal finish in the Tesoro Tournament.

In the AAU world, Carvalho played for the Sunshine Volleyball Club, which is ranked top 18 nationally. She helped lead them to a gold medal finish in the windy city national qualifier.

A 2021-22 AVCA Prep Phenom, Carvalho was nominated for the 2022 Under Armour All-America camps and was named one of the best "under the radar" players in the country for the PVL Championships.

With talent comes hard work and perseverance, which is something that Carvalho has had to do for most of her life. That is what Laura Grace Belote says about the incoming setter.

"Kahea's story of determination and dedication reflects God's hand at work," said Belote. "She knows what it takes to set top tier talent and remains composed. We expect her to compete early to play. We are elated she is joining the VolleyBucs!"

Carvalho's story stuck out to Head Coach David McFatrich, but so did her talents as a setter. He expects her to come in and compete for playing time early.

"[Carvalho] moves the ball around easily and has a very even temperament, which is great for a setter," said McFatrich. "She too, has been very well-trained technically and understands the game from a tactical standpoint as well."

From Carvalho's point of view, it was a no-brainer as soon as she met the coaches and got accustomed to the culture of Charleston Southern.

"I chose Charleston Southern because of the instant connection I was able to get with the coaches," said Carvalho. The culture, location and team is exactly what I was looking for, along with playing competitive D1 volleyball, which has always been a dream of mine."

The VolleyBucs have high expectations for the 2023 fall season, and Carvalho will have to play a part early on if CSU can get to where they want to go.
