CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern was outhit 14-8 in a
doubleheader vs. the Liberty Flames, but managed a split after a
3-0 loss and 5-4 win Friday, at Buccaneer Field. Tiffani Smith
threw a two-hit shutout in game one for the Flames, before Megan
Hall helped to lift the Bucs in game two with a bases clearing
triple, en route to the 5-4 win. CSU moved to 21-20-1 overall with
a 5-5 mark in the Big South, while Liberty moved to 20-11 and 5-3
in conference play.
Hall tallied two hits and one run scored to pace the Buccaneer
offense, including the three RBI triple in game two. Shayla Cullum
also recorded a pair of hits, with an RBI single coming in game
two. Melissa Adams chipped in with two hits, as the only other CSU
player to record multiple hits. For the Flames, Jenny Law had
three hits, while Bridgett Woods managed two hits, two RBIs and two
runs scored.
Sondra Vetter started in the circle for CSU in game one, retiring
the first six batter in order for a pair of scoreless innings. The
Bucs were also held hitless in the first two innings, failing to
convert on two walks in the second.
Liberty got going on offense in the top of the third, using three
hits to post one run. A walk and a single put two runners on with
one out, before J'nae Jefferson lit up the scoreboard with an RBI
single. Another hit in the inning loaded the bases, but Vetter
used back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the jam and strand
three.
CSU couldn't take advantage of a lead-off hit from Adams in the
bottom of the third, keeping the score at 1-0 through three. Smith
went on to strike out the side in the fourth, followed by two
strikeouts in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Vetter also held the Flames scoreless in that time, but Liberty
broke free for a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to provide
some insurance. Woods had a lead-off hit to start the seventh,
followed by a Buccaneer miscue. Two more hits in the innings
scored a run, while a throwing error allowed the second run of the
inning to score, giving the Flames a 3-0 advantage. Liberty held
on for the 3-0 win, after Smith had her fourth one, two, three
inning in the bottom of the seventh.
Smith picked up the win to improve to 11-3 on the year, after
throwing a complete game shutout, to go along with 10 strikeouts.
Vetter took the tough luck loss and dropped to 7-11, after allowing
two earned runs and striking out six in a complete game.
Game One Box
Game two started with another quick first inning, as Kimberly Hobbs
recorded a one, two, three inning for CSU. Liberty reached the
scoreboard first again, using two hits in the second to score a
run. Two singles and a fielder's choice loaded the bases with one
out, before Woods tallied a sacrifice fly to provide the run.
The Flames added one more in the top of the third, using some
timely hitting to go up 2-0. After a lead-off walk, a sacrifice
hit put a runner in scoring position for Ashley Bensinger, who came
up with an RBI single.
CSU bounced back with four runs of their own in the bottom of the
third, after four hits and one Liberty error. Trea Steele started
the inning off by reaching on an error, followed by hits from
Courtney Konyk and Megan Lombard. From there Hall came up with the
biggest hit of the day, using a bases clearing triple to put the
Bucs on top 3-2. Cullum gave CSU one more, with an RBI hit to send
Hall home for a 4-2 advantage.
Liberty chipped way at the lead with their third consecutive inning
with a run in the fourth. Kaylee West sent out a lead-off solo
homerun to make it a 4-3 score. The Flames looked to extend the
game with another run in the sixth, tying it a four apiece after a
Woods RBI hit.
Adams had a lead-off hit to start the seventh followed by a Lombard
groundout. Hall was intentionally walked from there and CSU was
down to their final out before extra innings with Erin Kegley at
bat. Kegley managed to put it in play and the Bucs took advantage
of a Liberty miscue to score an unearned run and take a 5-4 win.
Caitlin Allen earned the win to improve to 5-3, after allowing one
unearned run in three innings of relief. Katie Warrington picked
up the loss to drop to 6-6, throwing 1.2 innings and surrendering
the go ahead unearned run.
Game Two Box
CSU will look to win the season series, when they play game three
tomorrow at 1 p.m.
