CHARLESTON, S.C. - Liberty's bats came alive in the final game
of the weekend series against Charleston Southern as the Flames
pounded out 19 hits and scored 11 unanswered runs in defeating the
Buccaneers on Sunday afternoon, 15-4.
Linzy Rother connected on her sixth home run of the season,
drilling a three-run blast in the bottom of the third inning to
knot the game up at 4-4. The Flames, however, responded with an
eight run inning in the top of the seventh to wrap up the contest
and salvage a victory on the weekend.
Charleston Southern picked up their first conference series win
in the 2013 season, winning the doubleheader yesterday afternoon,
but fall to 9-33, 2-12 in Big South Conference play. Liberty
improves to 16-18, 5-7 in conference action with the win.
Ari Tedesco had two hits to pace the Bucs offense on the day,
while Stephanie Sbardella connected on an RBI double for CSU.
Holly Seiz led the Flames offensive efforts on the afternoon,
going 3-for-4 from the plate with 6 RBI, while Sammi Shivock added
four RBI from the plate. Katie Zavodny bounced back from two
hitless games yesterday afternoon in tying the Liberty school
record for hits in a game, going 5-for-6 from the plate while
scoring three runs.
Jennifer Giles (5-23) suffered the loss in the game after
winning both contests yesterday afternoon. The sophomore hurler
pitched 6.1 innings, striking out three while walking four in the
loss. Hayes Holdsworth pitched the final 0.2 innings in closing out
the contest.
Annah Jo Brittingham (7-5) picked up the win for the Flames,
throwing 4.2 innings of three-hit relief in closing out the game.
Chandler Ball opened the contest, throwing 2.1 innings in allowing
all four Buccaneers runs.
Liberty jumped out of the gates early, scoring four runs to open
the contest in the top of the first. Shivock and Seiz both had two
RBI singles in the frame to put the Flames ahead.
The Buccaneers took one back in the bottom of the inning as
Stephanie Sbardella doubled home Marci Christian in the bottom of
the first with one out.
CSU knotted the score up in the bottom of the third on one swing
from Rother. Sbardella reached off a one-out hit by pitch and Jana
Matthews drew a walk to put two Bucs runners on base for Rother and
the senior first baseman drilled a pitch over the left centerfield
fence to tie the score 4-4 after three innings.
Liberty took the lead for good in the top of the fourth as
Zavodny led off the inning with a base hit. She advanced to third
on Jill Stephens' bunt single and came around to score on Hanna
Nichols' groundout.
The Flames added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning
before closing out the contest with eight runs in the top of the
seventh.
Liberty's big hit of the contest came in the top of the seventh
as Seiz connected on a three-run home run to left centerfield,
scoring Sydnei Lester and Kelby Allen.
Charleston Southern returns to the road next weekend as the
Buccaneers travel to Buies Creek, N.C. to take on Campbell
University in a Big South Conference doubleheader scheduled for
Friday afternoon. First pitch at Littlejohn Stadium is set for 4
p.m.
