CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charleston Southern freshman Clarence Gallop earned a third place finish with a school-record in the hammer throw to lead the Bucs at Friday and Saturday's 49er Classic.
Gallop threw 59.14 meters to finish third in the 44-man field at the event held on the UNC Charlotte campus. The Providence, Rhode Island native had set the program record just two weeks ago with a 57.32 meter throw at the Palmetto Classic.
CSU senior sprinter Rozzie Johnson was the top performer among the track athletes for head coach Roosevelt Lofton and the Bucs. Johnson placed fourth in Friday's 100-meter prelims to earn a spot in Saturday's finals, where he showed in 5th place with a time of 10.56 seconds. Johnson narrowly missed out on a spot in the 200-meter finals as well, running 12th in the 121-man field.
Juniors Avery Coe and Kuaniyal Chol also enjoyed strong outings for the Bucs. Coe placed eighth in the triple jump with a 14.44 meter jump, while Chol raced to a 9th place finish in a 105-man 800-meter dash field. Coe also finished 10th in the long jump in a field of 48 competitors.
Other highlights for CSU were Jared Jeter's 11th place showing in the 400-meter prelims, and a third place standing for the 4x100 meter relay team. Only squads for North Carolina A&T and host Charlotte bested the Bucs in that event.
CSU heads to Jacksonville, Fla. next weekend to compete in the North Florida Invite.
