CHARLESTON, S.C. - Megan Lombard homered for the second time in
as many games to move past teammate Jana Matthews for the
Charleston Southern career lead, and finished 4-for-5 with 2 RBI
and a pair of runs scored overall, as the Bucs swept Savannah State
in a doubleheader at Buccaneer Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Lombard powered her 2nd home run of the season and 22nd of her
career to help CSU (15-13) to a 3-2 win in game one, and then added
two more base knocks in the back end of the twin bill to help
freshman Spencer Adkinson to her first career win.
Matthews notched a pair of multi-hit contests as well, while
Jessica Brock chipped in with a 2-for-3 outing in the game two
victory.
Game One
A two-out rally gave Savannah State (11-16) a 1-0
lead against CSU started Jennifer Giles (3-6) in the top of the
first. Amber Hallman stroked a single to start the charge, and came
around to score two batters later when Chelsea Parrish smacked a
RBI single into left field.
CSU came back to knot the score at 1 apiece in the bottom of the
second courtesy of its own two-out rally. Melissa Adams worked a
walk, advanced into scoring position on a passed ball, and came
plateward when Lombard scalded a run-scoring single past the diving
grasp of SSU shortstop Shamyra Adams.
Savannah State regained the advantage on a RBI single by Madison
Hedderly in the third, but was shut down for the rest of the way by
Giles and Morgan Dowdy.
Giles worked in and out of trouble over her 6.0 innings of work,
yielding the two runs on nine hits and a walk, while striking out
five.
Lombard continued her see-saw battle with Matthews atop the CSU
home run chart in the fifth, as she belted a towering drive over
the left-center field wall to square the tally at 2-2.
Lombard played a role again an inning later as the Bucs pulled
through with the decisive tally, drawing a free pass to push
Melanie Stickney to third and Ari Tedesco on to second. Hayes
Holdsworth was next, and was walked as well to register a
game-winning RBI.
Dowdy made sure that would stand up in the top of the seventh,
as she retired the Lady Tigers 1-2-3 to record her first save of
the year.
Game Two
Adkinson (1-0) made the most of her second career
start from the get-go in the nightcap of the double dip. The
freshman right-hander struck out the side in the first, and fanned
five batters over the opening two frames.
SSU's Madison Hedderly was just as good in the early going as
well, matching Adkinson zero-for-zero over the first three innings
before both sides got on the scoreboard in the fourth.
The Lady Tigers struck for a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth,
as Hallman doubled and Paolini singled in front of Chelsea Parrish,
who slugged a two-run double inside the third base bag and down the
left field line.
Keyed by Matthews, the Bucs answered back immediately to slice
their deficit in half in the last of the fourth. Matthews drilled
an opposite field double leading off, and touched the plate three
batters later when Kristin Kelleher found the left-center field gap
with a two-out RBI double.
Lombard re-assumed the starring role in the fifth, as she
hammered a double to center field to begin another two-out rally.
Brock then followed with a single through the originator to even
the game at 2-2. Matthews delivered another ringing double to right
field to advance Brock to third base, and the junior then came the
final 60 feet home when SSU catcher Parrish made an errant pickoff
throw which sailed down the left field line.
Yet another two-out marker provided insurance for Adkinson in
the bottom of the sixth. Stickney kept the inning alive with an
infield single, and eventually scored when Holdsworth rapped a RBI
double to provide the final 4-2 outcome.
Adkinson was terrific in authoring her first career complete
game, scattering six hits and a walk while punching out seven.
CSU embarks on Big South Conference play this weekend when it
travels upstate to Rock Hill for a three-game series with Winthrop.
The Bucs and Eagles will square off in a doubleheader on Saturday
at 2 p.m., before meeting for the final game of the set at 3 p.m.
Sunday. Game one of Saturday's doubleheader will be televised
