CHARLESTON, S.C. - Tory Schroff threw five scoreless innings and
the Charleston Southern hitting gave plenty of support via a 15-hit
showing to win Sunday's showdown, and the weekend series, over
Siena by an 8-3 tally.
Freshman Kevin Hickey went two-for-four with two RBI, including
a clutch full count RBI single in the seventh to provide CSU's
final run.
Alex Tomasovich began the scoring in the first inning with a
full count, two-out single into right field. Hickey's first single
put the hosts ahead 2-0 in the second. A four-run fourth inning
chased Siena starter Bryan Goossens from the mound. Drew Woodall
fired a double down the third base line to plate Chase Shelton.
Bobby Ison and Jaren Sustar singled for RBIs, and Ison came home on
a balk.
Siena got on the scoreboard with a leadoff homer by Mike Fish in
the sixth, and benefited from two hit batters and a walk to load
the bases. Fish came to the plate again and roped a single to
center to account for all of the Saints' scoring.
The Bucs did damage again with two away in the seventh and faced
three different pitchers attempting to get the elusive third out.
CSU loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a walk, and the
very next pitch was wild, allowing Shelton to cross the plate.
Hickey's RBI brought Robbie Streett home for his third run.
Sustar was 3-for-5 at the plate with a RBI. Schroff was nearly
untouchable, whiffing seven, until the fifth when he gave up the
solo shot to Fish and then loaded the bases in the sixth. Austin
Weekley had 1 1/3 productive innings to close the game, allowing
just one hit.
Charleston Southern will host Ohio State in a Tuesday afternoon
matchup with the first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
